2009 Burgundy night! Starter wine was a 2009 Henri Gouges Nuits-St.-Georges (non-blind). The remainder were done in 3 flights, blind.

• 2009 Thibault Liger-Belair Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Gruenchers 92 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

  Tasted blind. Spice, toast, and earthiness on the nose, with a touch of cola. Nice long finish of red fruits with some spice and good acids. Body was soft and elegant with good fruit--almost new world-ish. I really enjoyed this one.

• 2009 Mongeard-Mugneret Echezeaux 91 Points

  Tasted blind. A little brett, some spice on the nose (and a lot of heat), but overall seemed a bit closed down to me. Color was quite dark, but overall the wine was very "clear". On the body, it was a bit bigger than the others in the flight with some fruit, and quite a long finish with a bit of sweetness to it. Good wine, but I was hoping for a bit more--it didn't seem to show as well as the last time I had it a few months ago.

• 2009 Domaine Joseph Roty Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Fontenys 93 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

  Tasted blind. This stood out amongst its flight for being much darker in appearance, and the nose was also quite unique--something akin to bacon, perhaps? It continued to distinguish itself on the palate, with chewy chocolate and dark fruit flavors, and an elegant finish. Definitely a interesting wine with a lot of unique things going for it; it won it's flight.

• 2009 Gros Frère et Sœur Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru 90 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

  Tasted blind. Earth mixed with raspberries on the nose. Medium length finish with a touch of astringency. Not too much going on in the body, but still elegant.

• 2009 Ballot-Millot & Fils Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens 90 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru

  Tasted blind. I got a lot of heat on the nose. Big acids, mouthwatering on the finish. The body showed big red fruits with nice structure and medium tannins to finish. It was a bit more expressive than the Gros Freres Vosne-Romanee tasted just prior.

• 2009 Domaine Drouhin-Laroze Latricières-Chambertin 91 Points

  Tasted blind. Initially not giving me too much on the nose; eventually I teased out some light floral and fruit notes. Deeper, darker colored wine that presented big red fruits on the palate. Finished with some structure and a bit of tartness.

• 2009 Mongeard-Mugneret Grands-Echezeaux 93 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru

  Tasted blind. Funky, earthy nose but still quite expressive, lots of stuff going on there. On the body: wow. Elegant, smooth body with a good balance of fruit, tannins, and some acid. Lush fruits with good secondary flavors. A little bit reductive? "Winner" in its flight.

  Tasted blind. Big red fruit and heat on the nose. Bright red cherries and raspberries on the palate. Medium finish with good acids and nicely integrated tannins. Enjoyable to drink and well put together, but at this stage not showing much complexity compared to some others in the flight.

• 2009 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Murgers 94 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru

  Tasted blind. Winner of its flight. Earthy, red fruit, and candy on the nose--beautiful, really. Body was quite elegant, continuing with the red fruits and finishing with nicely integrated fine tannins.

  Tasted blind. Lots of red berries on the nose. A very elegant, smooth, silky wine on the palate. Medium finish that seemed a little short; the wine does fall off a bit mid-palate a little as well--I wanted a bit more. But, quite enjoyable nonetheless at this stage!

  Tasted blind. Compared to the rest of the lineup, a bit disjointed and underwhelming. Light toast and a touch of fruit on the nose, but also a bit of heat. I found the body tart and the finish tannic for my tastes.
