Dinner with the Burroughs

Uncle John, Aunt Rosie and the boys were back in town and we took them to our usual haunt. Food was great as always, and the two simple Burgundies we brought actually paired pretty well, making for a really good meal.

  Not quite as good as the last bottle I had, but still very impressive for what it is. It had a very nice nose, with notes of cream and butter, green apples and sweet lemons, with some earth and mineral notes sneaking in at the rear. It was not as saline and flinty as I last remembered it, but a pretty decent bouquet nonetheless. The palate was scored by some lovely bright acidity that zipped though citrussy notes of lemons, limes and green apples, which were than followed by a serious streak of minerality and spice in a long finish. There was a lot of energy in the wine and a nice amount of dried extract, but I got a feel that it was somehow less developed and less "together" than the previous bottle. Still good, but it did seem a bit more awkward and gangly until it managed to get some time and air in our glasses. One bottle left, and I will probably decant that before serving to see how it improves.

• 2009 Domaine Ludovic Belin Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Lavières Très Vieilles Vignes 91 Points

  Fourth bottle, very consistent showing - this remains a very yummy wine in its youth. As usual, the nose started out sweet and fruity, almost new world-like, with ripe blackberries and strawberry aromas ringed with just slightly more Burgundian notes of funky earth and mineral. The palate was very young, full of primary dark fruited notes wed to some red strawberry inflections. It had Lovely depth and presence. Sweet, ripe, very 2009, but also well-balanced by fresh acidity and underlined by a very nice stream of earthy, minerality and a little floral waft. A good wine with nice underlying material, but it needs time yet. Still though, it was a yummy accompanaiment to some well-cooked Chinese dishes.
