35th Anniversary Party Cellar Tasting

Rich & Dana's
Tasted Saturday, June 16, 2012 - Sunday, June 17, 2012 by AllRed with 1,535 views

Introduction

Our very generous friends, Rich & Dana, from the blind tasting groups, host an anniversary party on the 5s (30th, 35th, etc.). Married in 1977, this year they celebrated their 35th in epic fashion (their 30th was the "magnum party"). They invited members of their three tasting groups over for a casual nonblind, walk around tasting. Heavy hors d'oeuvres, small sandwiches and plenty of desserts were served as well.

There were just over thirty tasters in attendance, yet everyone was very mindful of their pours. So much so that only five bottles were finished that evening: the Lassalle Champagne, Boyer Martenot, Magnien, Latour Grand Vin and the LMHB. With so much wine and food left over, Rich and Dana had six of us back the following day to finish up what remained. Rich put on some '50s music and we enjoyed another evening of good wine and fellowship.

Back to Saturday...Rich laid out the wines at various stations throughout the house, which kept each area from being overly crowded and kept a nice flow to the evening. Wines are listed in the order tasted on night one- straight down Rich's list. The second night, I jumped around a bit and some wines were finished before I was able to revisit them. It was quite fun seeing how these developed overnight. Speaking of which...

All of the wines had pour spouts to help maintain responsible pours. Whites were opened by Rich and I half an hour before the evening began. Ten minutes prior to the first guests' arrival, we pulled the whites from the fridge. Rich had opened all of the reds an hour or two earlier that afternoon, leaving them open in the cellar. Reds were brought up from the cellar one station at a time, once it seemed that most of the tasters had worked their way through the previous station. Overnight, the wines were not recorked, just taken to the fridge in the case of whites & dessert wines, or to the cellar, in the case of the reds, but all were left open with the pour spouts intact allowing interaction with oxygen overnight. So by the time i retatsed on day two, most of these had been open for 26+ hours.

Flight 1 - I. Kitchen (whites) (16 Notes)

R&D's home was literally designed for entertaining, and I cannot think of a better layout for a kitchen than theirs. They have a large- and I mean large- island on which all of the whites were lined up. I came back to the Boyer-Martenot and Magnien later in the evening after I had my fill of reds, and I plus a couple others finished those on the first night. They were absolutely outstanding right to the last drop.

  • 1991 Penfolds Grange 93 Points

    Australia, South Australia

    (6/16/2012)

Aromas of mint/eucalyptus dominate the bouquet, leaving only brief glimpses of red fruit and floral notes underneath. Dusty tannins; flavors of red fruit, currants and mint with a long finish. There is an elegance about this wine, but it is also powerful. Seems like it wants to be great, but a bit too one dimensional for me. I would hold it I think, and hope that the mint integrates a bit more and becomes less of a distraction.
