Dinner at Le Pigeon

Introduction

David, Shane, and I had to come here after a not so great serving experience the previous night. Shane wasn't going to let me leave Portland without me going to Le Pigeon.

  • 1995 Pommery Champagne Cuvée Louise Brut 92 Points

    France, Champagne

    nose: wonderfully balanced nose of green apples, pears, bits of honey, white fruits, and a touch of white florals. Very nice depth with a nice sense of refinement to it as well.

    taste: medium/full bodied with medium+ acidity. Well balanced with good depth and rounded tones of green apples, pears, quince, white fruits and a touch of honey.

    overall: This is right in a great place right now. Not fully mature, but not youthful either. This developed well as it got more air and it put on more weight as well.

  • 2002 Dönnhoff Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel 93 Points

    Germany, Nahe

    nose: lush and succulent nose filled with tones of green apples, white fruits, cherries, and some bits of quince as well. Well balanced with real good depth that showed even more as it opened up.

    taste: full bodied with a real fatness to it along with medium+ acidity. Lush with deep tones of white fruits, quince, green apples and some bits of mangoes and tropical fruits.

    overall: This was pretty young. It probably could've used a decant as it got much better with air. It does feel like this can get better, but one wouldn't be faulted at all by opening it now.

  • 2001 Pierre Sparr Riesling Schoenenbourg 91 Points

    France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru

    nose: very aromatic with tones of pears, apples, white fruits and citrus tones. Nice depth with a fatter quality to all of the tones.

    taste: Full bodied with a real nice fat feel. Classy with medium+ acidity and great tones of pears, apples, oils, and citrus tones.

    overall: this definitely could've used some air. Still, it was a real quality alsatian riesling. This worked well with the donnhoff as both of these were on the bigger side.

Closing

Le Pigeon was utterly awesome. Oh yea, and the wines showed well too. This was a great place and a great idea on shane's part. Yet another great time in portland. The set up at le pigeon made for a lot of fun conversation and enjoyment of both wine and food.
