Tuesday night sushi and whites

I was off to portland the next day and in need of wine. I knew I was going to be on a beer binge

• 2008 F.X. Pichler Riesling Smaragd Ried Steinertal 91 Points

  Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau

  nose: fresh and linear nose of white fruits, spice tones, minerals, florals and some bits of herbal tones as well. Decent depth, but not very expressive.
  
  taste: medium/full bodied with medium+ acidity. Balanced with fatter tones of white fruits, peaches, mineral tones, and bits of spices. Good depth, but again, not very expressive right now.
  
  nose: seemed a bit on the dumb side right now. It didn't want to fully come out and play as the nose was a bit tight as well. Could use a few years to fully come into balance.

• 2008 F.X. Pichler Riesling Smaragd Loibner Berg 94 Points

  Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau

  nose: much more clear and aromatic than the steinertal with gorgeous and lush tones of white fruits, pears, minerals, and loads of white florals. There was a great amount of depth though it did seem a bit wound tight for me at first.
  
  taste: The nose would lead you to believe that this is larger, but instead leads into a deft medium feel with noticeable medium+ acidity. Great depth with wonderfully balanced tones of minerals, stone fruits, white fruits and a good amount of pears.
  
  overall: This was a great fx pichler. Great depth on both the nose and palate, this took a bit to open up and show everything it had to offer.

• 2007 Dönnhoff Schloßböckelheimer Kupfergrube Riesling Spätlese 92 Points

  Germany, Nahe

  nose: very plush and open nose to start off laced with mineral tones, pears, crushed rocks, green apples, quince and a good dose of white fruits and some guava. Excellent depth with nice layering already.
  
  taste: lovely and plush medium body feel with medium+ acidity that favors more to the racy side. The acidity is noticeable, but not overpowering along with lots of mineral tones, stone fruits, pears, apples, and white fruits.
  
  overall: this got better with a good amount of air. Wound up tight a little bit at first, but revealed itself into a lovely wine. This could definitely use a decant if drunk now or about 3 more years.

• 2007 Weingut Meinhard Forstreiter Grüner Veltliner Tabor 94 Points

  Austria, Niederösterreich, Kremstal

  nose: very aromatic and open nose of pears, minerals tones, snow peas, white pepper tones and bits of white fruits. Really good depth with a real nice herbal base on the nose.
  
  taste: medium/full bodied with a real fat and great feel. Medium acidity with real good completeness and tones of of white pepper, minerals, pears, oils, and some bits of herbs.
  
  overall: This is a great gruner. Wonderful depth with a real plushness to it.

A lot of sushi and a good amount of whites with not even close to a bad bottle in the bunch. Absolutely zero complaints there and a great way to start my vacation.
