Introduction

Was shopping in Whole Foods and came across a Beaujolais tasting.

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 2010 Georges Dubœuf Beaujolais-Villages 82 Points

    France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Beaujolais-Villages

Nothing really interesting to note. Juicy red fruit, delicate on the palate with a good deal of acidity. Lacked complexity.

  • 2010 Villa Ponciago Fleurie La Réserve 85 Points

    France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Fleurie

Ripe and juicy fruit on the palate with subtle floral and earthy tones. Didn't have much depth or complexity, but was enjoyable.

  • 2008 Domaine Piron & Lafont / Piron-Lameloise Chénas Quartz 88 Points

    France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Chénas

A very floral Gamay with nice mushroom and cranberry notes. Palate had medium intensity with lower than expected acidity...seemed a bit fuller bodied than other Gamay's I've had from 2008.

  • 2010 Domaine de la Voute des Crozes Côte de Brouilly 82 Points

France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Côte de Brouilly

Was a bit on the simplistic side with crunchy red fruit, nice acidity and subtle floral tones. Not bad, but not incredibly interesting.

  • 2010 Château Thivin Côte de Brouilly 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Côte de Brouilly

A zippy and youthful Gamay with red fruit that seemed to have an electric current running through it. Underneath the red fruit and floral notes is a dusty underbrush tone that offers up some rusticity. I feel like those rustic flavors will only intensify with age as the more juicy red fruit tones simmer down a bit. Should be beautiful with time.

  • 2011 Marcel Lapierre Morgon 91 Points

    France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Morgon

Nice red fruit, crushed rocks and lavender tones. The palate is taut with lots of energy and crunchy red fruits. This has nice underbrush tones to it with really lovely lilac tones. A bit more accessible than the 2010s were at this point, and not as juicy as the 2009s. A nice combination!
