Introduction

Quite a new winery with just a couple of vintages under its belt. Today's tasting was conducted by Isabelle Meunièr, who oversees the production of the wines from the Eola Hills in the Willamette Valley (Oregon). Other wines are produced in Burgundy and the Santa Rita Hills in California's Santa Barbara County.

  • 2009 Evening Land Vineyards Bourgogne Blanc

    France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Blanc

    This wine is actually produced 75/25 from St. Romain and Meursault and barrel fermented in older barrels - indigenes yeasts. Pale straw color; aromas showing some minerality together with some muted peach fruit; some sour lemon - very good acidity - chalky texture - extends out to a medium length finish. A good food wine.

  • 2009 Evening Land Vineyards Chardonnay Mad Hatter

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

    Slightly darker hue of light straw color; more perfume on the nose - floral and white tree fruits; rounder and fuller on the palate, with a slight oak edge; good citrus toned acidity; orange and lime flavors; much longer finish. About 20 or 25 % new oak barrels.

  • 2009 Evening Land Vineyards Chardonnay Arroyo Grande Valley

    USA, California, Central Coast, Arroyo Grande Valley

    Medium straw color; full nose featuring white tree fruits; even rounder and a bit fuller than the previous wine; attractive structure and weight on the palate; nice balance - lemony acidity; much longer finish than the Eola-Hills Chardonnay; tart, lemony finish - clean.

  • 2009 Evening Land Vineyards Beaune 1er Cru Bressandes

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

    Medium ruby color; a bit pungent on the nose - penetrating cherry; on the palate the tannins and acidity prevail; slightly bitter edge; finish holds the tannins and acidity over the light fruit. All destemmed - 20 % new oak.

  • 2009 Evening Land Vineyards Vosne-Romanée

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée

    From 3 separate vineyards - 20 % new bbls - 18 months.
    Slightly darker ruby; subdued nose - coaxed some berry fruit; a bit more round on the palate than the Beaune - lean style - dry acidic finish; began to open with more time in the glass with the aroma taking on more warm berry fruit.

  • 2009 Evening Land Vineyards Pinot Noir Seven Springs Vineyard

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills

    Bright ruby, not particularly dark; kind of a fuzzy nose, not focused; nice entry but seems disjointed - tannins smother the light fruit; finishes with the tannins.

  • 2009 Evening Land Vineyards Pinot Noir La Source Seven Springs Vineyard

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills

    This section of the vineyard - a selection with shallow topsoil.
    Similar color; more defined nose - penetrating berry fruit; round, full on the palate - rich texture good balance of fruit/acids/tannins - light cherry; nice lasting finish.

  • 2009 Evening Land Vineyards Pinot Noir Doc's Ranch Vineyard

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

    Small vineyard - about 1.5 acres; 45-50 % new bbls - 18 mths.
    Medium dark ruby; full aromas of spicy berry fruit - a smoky edge; round and. Ripe entry with the acidity framing the berry fruit; tart cherry on the finish, but the acids persist; not a particularly attractive finish.

  • 2009 Evening Land Vineyards Pinot Noir The Tempest Vineyard

    USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills

    Very dark black purple color with a thin purple rim; good weight on swirling; deep black fruit aromas; full on the palate - almost a blackberry juice flavor, but not overly sweet; very long finish where the fruit lasts.

  • 2009 Evening Land Vineyards Pinot Noir Tempest Bloom's Field

    USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills

    Again, extremely dark; on swirling not as full; some elegance on the nose - not as pronounced as the previous wine, but pleasing cherry fruit; enters with pleasing cherry fruit - then the acids show, followed by the tannins, and back to the acidity; acids come forth over the fruit on the finish, which stays back; fruit coming through on the long finish. Quite pleasing in depth.
