Introduction

While shopping in our local gourmet supermarket, I saw that they had in a new shipment of foie gras from Hudson Valley Farms. I couldn't resist. :)

Flight 1 - Seared Foie Gras (1 Note)

This wine was really divine. The purity and focus were very memorable.

  • 2002 Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Eiswein 93 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Served with seared foie gras. The nose is inviting. It is not the most complex, but the purity and power pull me to it again and again and again. It shows lime blossom, wet stones, and a touch of smoke. The palate has a strong acidic structure. I find candied lime, vanilla, custard, baking spice, and minerality.

Flight 2 - Grilled Flank Steak (1 Note)

Tracy said it best. "It is kind of like a Leonetti without the structure."

I picked it because 97 is known in Washington as a tannic vintage. I thought this wine would complement the flank. Unfortunately, this wine did not have many tannins at all.

  • 1997 Northstar Merlot Columbia Valley 83 Points

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

The nose shows plenty of new oak, charcoal, and some high pitched fruit. The palate is also quite oaky and almost completely lacking in structure. The finish is overly sweet in an artificial way. I also get a grape hard candy element throughout the entire palate. Interestingly this was better with the grilled flank steak. I thought the meat would overwhelm it, but they actually complemented each other pretty well.

Closing

I wish I had picked a better wine to go with the flank steak, but it still did not mar a wonderful evening.
