  • 2009 A.J. Adam Hofberg Riesling feinherb

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

    Straw, edged in green. Very pure, lacy, and airy nose of tangerine, raspberry cream, and a hint of petroleum; a very pretty nose. Palate exquisitely balanced, good acid, and with exceedingly persistent length. So pure, so fresh and light. Absolutely beautiful wine.

  • 2002 Domaine Roulot Meursault Les Tessons Clos de Mon Plaisir

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

    Golden green. Reserved nose of ash, gouttey Chardonnay, copper, minerals, some butterscotch; a touch of charred oak; nice but reserved. Palate really well balanced, super elegant; more copper, orange peel. Excellent, subtle length. Exquisite balance, again and again. This is really my kind of white Burgundy. Fantastic.

  • 2002 Henri Prudhon & Fils Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chenevottes

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

    Deep gold, edge of orange. Explosive spice, baking spices, tangerine peel. Heady nose, a bit hot, very ripe. Palate also spicy, tangerine cream, but upstaged by the balance of the Roulot. Medium length. Nice wine and I enjoyed it quite a bit, but not great. A little chunky and unrefined, but Chassagne can be that way.

  • 2005 Domaine du Château de Chorey (Germain) Beaune 1er Cru Cuvée Tante Berthe

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

    Very, very dark ruby, not quite blood; opaque. Huge nose of extra-ripe fruit, floral, lots of oak; cherry liqueur; almost but not quite some heat. A gigantic nose that will develop some volatility (balsamic notes) with age that will be complicated and awesome, I'm sure. Palate huge, full bodied, extracted, and tannic but still balanced. Toasty oak. Modern, to understate. With air, definitely a streak of green tobacco, with the palate showing cherry and inner-palate perfume of some intensity. Good, primary length. Fantastic nose. Very nice wine in a modern style (which I don't always love). Try in 5.

  • 1985 Prieuré Saint-Jean de Bébian Coteaux du Languedoc

    France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Coteaux du Languedoc

    Bricked black. Reticent nose, at first, of tapenade, some smoky anchovy thing, capers, stones, raspberries. Later, a freaking jar of blackberry/boysenberry jam, sweet and gushing fruit. Palate big, very tannic, but with massive reserves of concentrated fruit, too. Kind of a baby! Very full bodied. Pretty long, but tannic there, too. Amazing wine. Epic. A little exhausting like and epic, too. Wow!

  • 1990 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    Black blood, with a touch of brick. Crazy complex on nose -- sweet cherry, cream, raspberry, mango (?); chalk. Earlier, the nose was all leathery horse, but that all blew off leaving a very pure nose. Palate silky, round, well balanced, plenty of fruit. Medium body, medium length. Quite Burgundian, with a really kaleidoscopic nose. Ready to go, but no hurry, as this will keep for many years. An excellent bottle of '90 Beau!

  • 1974 Sebastiani Vineyards & Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Proprietor's Reserve

    USA, California, North Coast

    Lightly bricked deep blood (wow, dark). Wet concrete, strawberry jam; pruney raisin; some oxidation. Palate disjointed, very tannic, wispy fruit tryin' to get to heaven before they close the door. A little flaccid. Bone-dry, tannic finish. OK with dinner, but way past its best (though for one of the group it was WOTN -- go figure).

  • 1987 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon The Montelena Estate

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    Inky purple black. Deep, inky nose of plum, cut grass, a hint of chalk (well in control), iodine, velvet; later, loads of cigar tobacco. Very deep nose. When I reflect on the nose, I remember how this exact wine smelled on release; it is the same now, pretty much, just more evolved. Palate really full, velvety, sweet, but not "big" exactly. Very sweet fruit; ink, iodine, full bodied. Lots of tannin, but well balanced, with acres of fruit right there, too. On its way, but miles and miles to go. Very intense wine. Splendid.
