Introduction

There were 36 bottles of Riesling and 3 bottles of Burgundy. Guess which ones I took notes on… A very, VERY odd little impromptu horizontal of 1974 Clair-Dau Gervrey Chambertin Premier Crus… Thanks, Justin and Danielle!

  • 1974 Domaine Clair-Daü Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Estournelles-St.-Jacques

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

    Bricked blood. Nose surprisingly deep, spicy, with even a little freshness; earth, coffee, cherry. Very impressive for the vintage. Palate medium bodied, rickety fruit -- plenty of spice but not much fruit left. Decent finish. All around very good for the vintage, but so-so in an absolute sense. An artifact.

  • 1974 Domaine Clair-Daü Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Combe aux Moines

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

    Bricked ruby. Nose of stones, old-Burgundy vitamins, earth, spice, and a nice bloom of delicious strawberry and cherry fruit; definitely it's got some power left; band-aids, coffee, iron. Wow! Palate resolved, somewhat glossy, just a bit of sweet fruit left, roses, cherry. Some length to it, too. Nice wine! By far the best of these three.

    Very bricked ruby. Minimalist mineral, stony nose. No fruit left. Some smoked fish. Palate rather dried out, tannic. Not unpleasant, but needs a walker to get to its dentures over on the dresser.
