Introduction

This event was put together by Joe G (galewskj) to feature domestic pinots and chards. !3 attended. There was a very nice mix of wines.

Flight 1 - Opening Wines (2 Notes)

  • 2011 Château de Campuget Costières-de-Nîmes Rosé Tradition de Campuget 87 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Costières-de-Nîmes

    Light pink color. Drank one glass over 20 minutes. Nose as a very interesting dusty/cedar essence that is dominant, followed by mineral, and cherry in the background. The palate is light and adds tart fruit , cherry, some citrus, and is rather tangy. This is pretty nice, i found the nose interesting but a tad one dimensional. 87-88pts.

  • NV Louis Roederer Champagne Brut Premier 91 Points

    France, Champagne

    Brought this to the tasting as a bonus kick off bottle for our anniversary. I have to say this is becoming one of my favorite n/v's. Darn good stuff and at $35, a very good QPR. Drank 2 glasses over 20 minutes or so. This has nice fruit, pear, green apple, yeast, bright, good lift, crisp, clean and long finish. Nice minerality and balance. 91+ to 92pts.

Flight 2 - Chardonnay Flight (4 Notes)

  • 2009 Foley Estates Chardonnay Steel 91 Points

    USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills

    Pale gold color. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. This unoaked chard was quite bright and tropical on the nose. Pear, pineapple, melon, lightly floral. The palate was tart, nice acid, citrus, almost sauv blanc like. Nice finish. This was a crowd pleaser especially at the price point.

  • 2007 Scherrer Winery Chardonnay Scherrer Vineyard 86 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Alexander Valley

    light-medium gold color. Nose shows very prominent toasty oak, light butter notes, apple, smoke. The palate tastes like burnt oak, smoke, and woody, citrus, smoke. The finish is oaky. Unfortunately, this was just way to oaky and was universally panned by the group. It was drinkable, but certainly not what I want in a chard. 85-86pts.

  • 2005 Kistler Chardonnay Vine Hill Vineyard 93 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

    Medium-light gold color. Drank one glass over 30 minutes. This was a treat. Beautiful full nose, round, buttery, green apple, light oak. The palate has full body, tangy, peach, apple, citrus, rich, very nice balance here. Long finish. Really tasty. My and group #2 WOTN of the chards.

  • 2006 Aubert Chardonnay Lauren Estate Vineyard 94 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

    Medium light gold color. This is a stunning wine. Complex nose of pear, smoke, florals, spie, a little oak, citrus andminerals. The palate is very elegant, lifted, feels weightless, but has incredible intensity and depth, minerals, very clean and balanced, long intense finish. This was really classy. Unanimous WOTN of the chards with all 13 votes.

Flight 3 - Pinot Noir Flight (5 Notes)

  • 2006 Keller Estate Pinot Noir La Cruz Vineyard 90 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

    Medium dark red color. Pop and pour. Drank 1 glass over 45 minutes. This still benefits form about 15 minutes in the glass. What I love about this wine is the purity of fruit, ripe raspberry and bing cherry, a little caramel shows later. In the mouth this is ripe, soft and round, adds spice to the berry and cherry, medium finish. Killer QPR at 17.99.

  • 2006 Rhys Alesia Pinot Noir San Mateo County 87 Points

    USA, California, San Francisco Bay, San Mateo County

    Medium red color. Pop and pour, drank 1 glass over 45 minutes. Nose is a bit funky, cherry, reticent. The palate seems tannic, bitter, on the green side, thin mid palate, lacking substance or elegance.

  • 2007 Rivers-Marie Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast 92 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

    Dark red color witha purple hue. Pop and pour. Drank 1 glass over 45 minutes. Nose has very nice fruit, ripe, red berries, vanilla, dry earth, mushroom, , spice, oak, a bit sweet. This took 15 minutes to open well, but was then really nice. The palate has nice acid, balance, good body: medium-full, well integrated, rich ripe red fruits, medium plus finish. My and group #2 WOTN of the pinots.

  • 2007 Sojourn Pinot Noir Sangiacomo Vineyard 92 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

    Dark red color. Pop and pour, drank one glass over 30 minutes. Thiswas a little more tight on opening. I like the earthiness of the nose; spices, cherry, vanilla, cedar. The palate has full body, layers of fruit, earth, spice, tannins are a bit firm but round with some time. This took some time to get my attention, but ultimately it edged the Rivers '07 Sonoma by a hair as WOTN of the pinots. 91+ to 92pts.

  • 2007 Kutch Pinot Noir Kanzler Vineyard 91 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

    Medium dark red color. Pop and pour, drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. Nose shows big ripe fruit, black cherry, cedar, some dry herbs. The palate has big dark red fruit, nice acid, finesse, nice finish. Very good.

Flight 4 - Dessert Wine (1 Note)

  • 2000 Árvay János Tokaji Aszú 6 Puttonyos 91 Points

    Hungary, Tokaji

    Medium orange color. Pop and pour, drank a small pour over 15 minutes. Nose has some earthiness, florals, apricot, honey, spice, dates. The palate is rather sweet but has adequate acids to balance, ripe fruits of apricot, citrus, honey, spicy, figs. Medium plus finish.

Closing

WOTN was awarded to both a pinot and a chard based on top 2 voting of the group.

Chards: WOTN, unanimously, was the 2006 Aubert Lauren with 26pts.
#2 WOTN was the 2005 Kistler Vine Hill with 10 of the 13 second place votes.

Pinots: a near tie for WOTN, the '07 Sojourn Sangiacomo (7x2 + 3x1=17pts) edged the '07 Rivers Marie Sonoma (6x2 + 4x1 = 16pts) by a point. I would have to agree, it was splitting hairs to pick a winner from those two.
