Flight 1 - White and Aperitif (2 Notes)

  • 2009 Hardys Chardonnay Eileen Hardy 91 Points

    Australia, Tasmania

    First time trying a Chardonnay from Tasmania and it is a pleasant surprise. Light golden yellow, young and fresh on the nose, but rather strong oak element, along with pineapple and touch of mineral. It has a refined palate with nice pure fruits, creamy texture, lean but good seamless mid-palate. Long finish with hints of spiciness. It is a very good cool climate Chardonnay but at the moment the oak influence is too strong and it needs 3-4 years for oak to be better integrate.

  • 2004 Perrier-Jouët Champagne Belle Epoque 92 Points

    France, Champagne

    Bright and clear with fine beautiful beads. It has an aromatic nose, with pear, nutty, hints of creaminess and showing chard influence nose. Very fresh and young with silky mouthfeel, elegant and touch of feminine. Nice flavour of pear and nuttiness. Fine acidity with long aftertaste. I enjoyed it a lot although I still prefer something more intense like Cristal.

Flight 2 - 3 more than 10 years red (3 Notes)

  • 1998 Domaine de Montille Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens 90 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru

    Attractive ruby red. No decant and air for 1-2 hours. Still youthful nose, cherry and mineral. Smooth and slightly sweet on palate, with cherry, earth and soil. Some metallic finish. I have a high expectation on this wine as it is made by a very good Burg producer but ended up a little disappointed. It is still quite primary at the moment and not fully open up, maybe some decanting prior to taste will help.

  • 2000 Château Léoville Barton La Réserve de Léoville Barton 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Julien

    Deeply coloured, beautiful garnet hue with no sign of age. Lifted nose of dark fruits, blackcurrant interwovens with roasted coffee and smokiness. Very nice Barton on palate, although it is softer and less masculine, exhibits blackcurrant, tobacco and pencil shaving. Good mid-palate and midium finish. Drinking very well tonight and it is meant for early drinking as compared to Leoville Barton.

  • 1999 Elderton Shiraz Single Vineyard Command 92 Points

    Australia, South Australia, Barossa

    Decanted for 1 hour. Deep garnet red, nice nose of ripe fruits, spice, licorice and some smoky character. Open nicely after decant, opulent on entry, exhibits sweet fruits and plum. Rich mouthfeel but not heavy. Long spicy finish with smooth tannins. Drank during a dinner and this is better than my last bottle. Very good and definitely more than 10 yeras of age has given the rounded mouthfeel and move away from a fruits bomb.

Flight 3 - 3 young and opulent Aussie Shiraz (3 Notes)

  • 2005 R Wines Shiraz Anamorphosis 95 Points

    Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

    Very dark and opaque and darker than Elderton Command 1999. Lifted nose, very primary and fruits driven, showing aromas of dark fruits, plum, blackberry with a touch of smokiness. Double decant 3 hours and it evolved nicely on palate. Very opulent and good concentration, plenty of sweet fruits, blackbrerry, blueberry and plum. Very good, rounded mouthfeel with a long persistent aftertaste and velvety tannins. This is very enjoying and one step up of Command.

  • 2004 Torbreck RunRig 95 Points

    Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

    Deep opaque and inky. Very signature run rig on the nose, blueberry, blackberry, dark plum with hints of floral and violet. Decanted for 1+ hours and this has opened nicely for business. Deep and opulent with a very nice touch of floral notes, rich dark fruits and spicy fruits. Finishes long and fine. This is obviously better than my last bottle drank at home and showing the standard of one of the top Aussie Shiraz.

  • 2005 Torbreck Shiraz The Laird 97 Points

    This is the most anticipated wines of the night and the reason we gather tonight. It is the most expensive wines upon release in Australia and we got it at the price of more than double of a Penfolds Grange. I understand we may be paying higher but this only available in a small quantity. A glass of this is more expensive than few other wines (full bottle) we had tonight.
    This has also been double decanted for 3+ hours, same as R Wines Shiraz Anamorphosis. It has the usual colour of a young and full bodied Shiraz - Dark & opaque. Open nicely although it continue to improve in the glass, very deep and opulent nose, concentrated but showing slight pungentness may due to slight warmer room temperature, along with ripe, pruney character, blueberry, and hints of licorice. This has a very young and primarly nose. Very plush and concentrated on palate, rounded mouthfeel with layers of ripe, sweet and dark fruits. Swallowed 36 months French oak barriques but the oak integration is so well and matched by the opulent fruits. Very long and persistent finish with a hints of truffle.
    This is clearly the wine of the night for everybody and it is by compare to other top wines we can fully appreciate this wine. However we all agreed that the price is too steep to consider value or even worth the buy. In contrast Run Rig or R Wines Anamorphosis offer much better value for money.

Flight 4 - Desserts wine (1 Note)

  • 1999 Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

    Deep amber colour and it look older than its actual age. It has aroma of tea leaf, apricot and some nutty character. Just moderately sweet on palate, with black tea leave, apricot and some smoky character. A bit lean too and unlike some Sauternes I tasted, sweet and rich, perhaps this is due to bottle variation.
