Introduction

Great dinner at Vidalia with SQN, Schrader, and Ridge...Actually there was another bottle of Argyle Riesling, I believe, but don't remember which one to write up a note on it.

Was out of town since Saturday morning, so just getting these notes up now.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2006 Sine Qua Non Syrah Raven Series 95 Points

    USA, California, Central Coast

I'll tail onto PinkMoon's tasting note a bit, since we had this together...I thought it was definitely interesting to juxtapose the SQN and Schrader. I thought this edged out the Schrader, but they both were fabulous. Rich dark fruits, spice...hints of chocolate and eucalyptus maybe? Layers of flavors that evolved through the finish. Silky smooth, really fine tannins. Decanted, but poured almost immediately.

Love this stuff, I can't wait to get on Manfred's mailing list...

And indeed a great evening of wine!

  • 2004 Schrader Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon CCS Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard 94 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

Had at great wine dinner with PinkMoon.

Decanted and sat for about an hour before we got into it. Huge CA fruit forward Cab. Very ripe dark fruit, boysenberries, cassis...definitely a very ripe, chewy style. Very smooth tannins, but maybe could have used a bit more for balance. Interesting to have this next to a SQN Syrah...

  • 1984 Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon Monte Bello 88 Points

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

Since I so rarely drink old wine, I really wanted to try this when it was an option at the dinner with Pinkmoon.

This was definitely overshadowed by the Schrader and SQN that we had alongside this, but it was a great learning experience I think. This was made in a very different style to begin with, and it's also a style I don't have a lot of exposure to, since I tend to drink fairly young CA wines at this point.

This had an array of much more subtle, mature flavors, and was still drinking just fine. I got a bit of wood off of it, as well as cured meat and leather. Not much in the way of fruits I thought, and as PinkMoon noted in his note, there was some underlying flavor which wasn't the most pleasing. Maybe just a hint of TCA?
