Introduction

Another great night with the NY/NJ crew and OttawaB visiting from Canada. Tons of great wine and we really made the most of the night as usual. Notes are in the order the wines were served.

Flight 1 - Whites and Rose (3 Notes)

  • 2007 Prager Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Zwerithaler

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau

    Really nice aromatics on the nose that mix english pea, lemon and grapefruit with an overall fresh herbaceous-ness. Smooth mouthfeel, crisp acidity, long finish. Very nice way to start the evening.

  • 2010 Lucien Crochet Sancerre Pinot Rosé

    France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre

    Not very aromatic in the glass but there a some notes of red fruit there. Mineral-driven on the palate with some notes of tart red fruit. High acidity, light bodied, medium finish.

  • 2009 Tawse Chardonnay Quarry Road Vineyard

    Canada, Ontario, Niagara Peninsula, Vinemount Ridge VQA

    Green apple with notes of butter and vanilla on the nose. Oak treatment is noticeable but well-balanced. Similar on the palate with medium body, medium high acidity and a medium length finish.

Flight 2 - Mixed Reds (6 Notes)

  • 1983 Château Cantemerle

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

    Great color for its age. Medium intensity ruby/garnet (somewhere between the two). Nice nose with notes of cassis, earth and leather. Still showing an almost surprising amount of fruit on the palate. Elegantly structured with medium body, tannin, and acid. Drinking pretty well right now.

  • 1989 Robert Michel Cornas La Geynale

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas

    Notes of olive, leather, blueberry and peach on th nose. Similar on the palate. Medium body with high acidity and high fine-grained tannin.

  • 2000 Domaine de la Gatine

    France, Bordeaux, Entre-Deux-Mers, Premières Côtes de Bordeaux

    Medium ruby color with no noticeable sediment. Very vegetal nose showing notes of tomato and pyrazine. Similar on the palate. Medium body and acidity, short finish, and mouth drying.

  • 2001 Paul Hobbs Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    Intense ripe fruit on the nose: blackberry, cherry, blueberry and notes of toasted oak. Full-bodied, medium acid, medium high tannin, medium long to long finish.

  • 2008 Mount Eden Vineyards Pinot Noir

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

    Medium transparent ruby color in the glass. Very nice nose mixing red fruit and spice. Similar flavor profile on the palate. Balanced and well-structured with medium tannin, medium high acidity and a long finish.

  • 2009 Dutton-Goldfield Pinot Noir Dutton Ranch

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

    Ripe, sweet grapes fruit on the nose. More ripe fruit on the palate. Noticeable oak treatment, full-bodied, medium tannin and acid. A little bit hot.

Flight 3 - Served Blind (1 Note)

  • 2007 Crushpad Vayniac Cabernet Sauvignon

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    Served blind. Very dark, inky color in the glass. Heavy oak treatment on the nose mixed with notes of dark chocolate and some underlying black cherry. Full-bodied with thick, unctuous texture, but mouth drying and hot on the finish. My guess was for Aussie Shiraz.

Flight 4 - More Mixed Reds (15 Notes)

  • 1997 Anderson's Conn Valley Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Reserve

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    Aromatics of ripe black cherry, cassis, vanilla and oak. Simialr on the palate with a spicy finish. Smooth mouthfeel. Medium to full-bodied. Medium tannin and acid. Nice Cabernet.

  • 1998 Viña Almaviva S.A. Almaviva

    Chile, Maipo Valley, Puente Alto

    Very quick taste of this one. Very green nose with noticeable oak and a sort of a root beer component. Medium acid, mouth dryin tannin and a short finish.

  • 2001 Château Le Gay Pomerol

    Still youthful on the nose with notes of black cherry, smoke and toasted oak. Elegant structure. Medium bodied with medium tannin and acid. drinking very well right now.

    Very quick taste. Tons of caramel and oak on the nose with some underlying dark fruit. Similar on the palate. Big tannin structure with medium acidity and a medium long finish.

    Prett nose with notes of ripe strawberry, oak, and a little underlying forest floor. Similar notes on the palate with additional notes of baking spice. High tannin and acid. Modern style. Showing very well.

    Rich aromatics on the nose of ripe cherry, cassis, vanilla and oak. Similar profile on the palate with medium to full body, medium acid and medium high tannin structure. Long finish. Nice stuff.

    Really interesting nose showing notes of oak perfumed with lavender. Rich, ripe fruit on the palate with heavy oak treatment. Full-bodied with low to medium tannin and acid.

Flight 5 - Dessert Wine (1 Note)

  • 2003 Domaine des Baumard Quarts de Chaume Grand Cru

    France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Quarts de Chaume Grand Cru

    Dark gold color in the glass. Great chenin blanc nose with notes od honey, florals and slightly "woolly." Similar notes on the palate with medium body and high acidity. Very nice.
