Flight 1 - Champagne (2 Notes)

  • 1996 Philipponnat Champagne Brut Clos des Goisses 93 Points

    France, Champagne

    Apple and pear to start, followed by lemon and lemon peel middle to finish. Long long, very powerful and dense. I haven't had this wine in a couple of years and it is starting to lose the incredible freshness from before, and like most 1996s is starting to show some mid-life maturity.

  • 2000 Philipponnat Champagne Juste Rosé Clos des Goisses 92 Points

    France, Champagne

    Big scaled Rose Champagne with a "red wine" character of strawberry and raspberry in addition to some floral character. Moderate length and power. I don't think I've ever had Clos des Goisses Rose before, thanks, Ken!

Flight 2 - White Burgundy (4 Notes)

  • 2005 Camille Giroud Corton-Charlemagne 93 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

    From magnum. Lush, powerful, fat stone fruit aromas. Starts much the same on palate, but finishes with more balance and great structure and textures. Very impressive.

  • 2000 Louis Jadot Corton-Charlemagne Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot Flawed

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

    Moderately oxidized, still good to drink (perhaps 85 or 86 points tonight), but not to the standard i expect from Jadot Corton Charlemagne is a good vintage, and not as good as prior bottles.

  • 2006 Coche-Dury Meursault Les Rougeots 93 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

    Served alongside its 2005 counterpart. Peach and apricot start, slightly floral as well. Similar start on palate, then transitioning to lemon and lemon peel onto long, powerful finish. Really sensationally balanced for the vintage, especially for a Villages wine, of course it is from Coche-Dury.

  • 2005 Coche-Dury Meursault Les Rougeots 91 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

    Decanted for approx 30 minutes because Matt remembered his previous bottle started with lots of sulfur. That wasn't an issue here at all. Mostly orchard fruit aromas and flavors, very firm overall with lots of structure and power, with some rough edges. Served alongside the same wine from the 2006 vintage, which I definitely preferred tonight, as did most people at tonight's dinner.

Flight 3 - Red Burgundy (5 Notes)

  • 1997 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Clos Vougeot 89 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

    Lots of mature black fruit aromas, moderate spice. Same mature fruit on palate with good earthy character, soft textures. Slightly short on acid, so I'd be drinking this up over the next few years.

  • 1997 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses 94 Points

    Another of the Library release bottles, several of which I've had the opportunity to try in the past few months. This was open approx five hours before serving, of which two were in a decanter. That air time is critical right now for this wine, because two bottles given less air were far less interesting than two with plenty of air. Spice-driven aromatic start with great red and black cherry. More black fruit on palate, again with plenty of spice. Sensational structure with great balance that supports a very elegant, long finish.

  • 1993 Domaine René Engel Clos Vougeot 94 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

    Lots of black cherry, blackberry aromas with some forest floor hints. Similar black fruit on palate with great density and lots of bulky structure helping provide sensational power. Very long finish, this wine will most likely stay at this level for decades to come. Similar to another bottle from last summer.

  • 2002 Louis Jadot Bonnes Mares

    Open and decanted an hour+ before serving, but that wasn't nearly enough. Clearly lots of great raw materials and concentration here, but this is so backward today that it really wasn't providing much pleasure tonight and I found it hard to assess, although i can easily believe it has 92-95 point potential. Others enjoyed it more today.

Flight 4 - Chapoutier Côte-Rôtie (1 Note)

    Absolutely sensational. Smoky red and black cherry aromas with dense meaty spice. Similar fruit profile on palate with hints of emerging earthy, spicy flavors. Lots of power and concentration. Still in the early stages of its peak drinking window, thanks for Paul for cracking open his first bottle of the solid case he owns!

Flight 5 - Bordeaux (6 Notes)

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

    From magnum. Lots of big, ripe black plum and cherry with liqueur notes. Similar fat fruit flavors that many of the dinner attendees enjoyed a lot but I found slightly simple.

    Lots of big ripe black fruit with some cassis aromas. Same lush black fruit on palate with good spice, hints of green pepper come through near end. Good structure, good balance.

    Big black fruit with lots of structure. Tonight it came across to me as very one dimensional. Decanted for a couple of hours, but this wine obviously needs lots and lots more time.

    Decanted for a couple of hours, and certainly needing much more time to soften and integrate, but this 2000 shows great concentration but also balance. Plum, black currant with licorice and some tobacco aromas. Similar black fruit on palate also with good spice and elegant structure.

    Not a personal favorite tonight, this was very pale, just moderately interesting, and I could easily have been convinced it was Tawny Port.

  • 2001 Château Suduiraut

    Lush, powerful and engaging tropical fruit aromas and flavors. Simpler finish than I recalled or expected based on previous times I've had this wine, but perhaps it was my tired palate at this point in the evening.
