  • 2004 François Raveneau Chablis Grand Cru Valmur Flawed

    France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

    Something was wrong with this bottle, but none of us could tell exactly what. It started with very uncharacteristic fat, overripe aromas, then big fruit to start on palate, but very clipped. Within 15-20 minutes this got shorter, fruit more muted and the aromas started taking on more of a varnish element. Ethyl acetate? Corked? Ken took home the bottle and is going to provide a progress report tomorrow.

  • 2004 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Valmur 90 Points

    France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

    Apple and lemon aromas, slightly mature, but no sign of the oxidation issues that has afflicted the majority of bottles of Fevre 2004 I've tried in 2012. Similar fruit on palate with moderate density and complexity, but very good acidity and minerality. If served blind, I doubt I would have thought Grand Cru.

  • 2002 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Clos de la Roche 89 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

    Open an hour+ before poured. Good black fruit, slightly dominated by new oak spice aromas. Good power, plenty of ripe fruit, easy to enjoy, but not much finesse. An interesting contrast to the Raphet 2002 CdlR in the next glass. If tasted blind, I wouldn't have thought either from 2002, this wine had the ripeness of 2003 and the Raphet the mature development of a 2000.

  • 2002 Gérard Raphet Clos de la Roche 91 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

    Open an hour+ before pouring. Charming and mature red and black fruit aromas with some licorice, leather and earth. Very similar on palate with some mushroom flavors in the background. interesting contrast with the Girardin 2002 CdlR in the next glass, which was far more "modern" styled with new oak dominating. I know that Raphet's style has changed from the 1990s when it was also very "modern" and new oak influenced, but this 2002 was certainly quite classic. Perhaps showing a little older than I'd expect from 2002 Grand Cru, if served blind I would have thought this from 2000.

  • 2002 Domaine Lignier-Michelot Clos de la Roche 93 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

    Open and decanted approx 2 hours before serving. Ripe cherry aromas with floral background hints. Mostly black cherry flavors with some red cherry hints, lots of spice throughout. Great acidity and integrated tannins provide support and length. Still has upside from here. Great comparison with its more slutty 2003 counterpart in the next glass.

  • 2003 Domaine Lignier-Michelot Clos de la Roche 89 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

    Open approx 2 hours before serving. Blackberry and black cherry aromas with licorice, baking spice, hints of cocoa. Similar fruit profile on palate, this stays short of any roasted or jammy character, but is a bit one dimensional, particularly when compared to its more balanced 2002 counterpart served alongside.

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac

    From 375 ml bottle. At a great place now, just the perfect level of sweetness to go with dessert and not overpower the food.
