Brocard Les Clos & Owen Roe Syrah 02: A Couple of winners

Introduction

My wife is "off the wagon" following a Lime Disease treatment so I've started standing up some interesting wines to welcome her back to the fold. Last night's wines were real stand outs.

  • 2007 Jean-Marc Brocard Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 92 Points

    P&P. Brilliant medium yellow. Initial aromas of crushed oyster shells and fresh sea breeze. Then comes lemon oil, stone and a touch of honey. Rich and bright on the palate with clean, fresh flavors of lemon, green apple and mango. Long and focused but not at all austere, this is starting to drink well and is showing the first elements of secondary complexity. I don't think this will be a long distance runner but should provide nice classic Chablis drinking for several more years. Drink now - 2017.

  • 2002 Owen Roe Syrah DuBrul Vineyard / Rosa Mystica Block 94 Points

    Decanted 2 hours. Opaque crimson/purple with a thin clear rim. The first whiff screams "wow" with sweet spice, smoked meat, and vanilla tinged black plum jam. Plush, rich and lively on the palate with layers of black fruit flavors, sweet spice, licorice and a core of black fruit liqueur. Excellent balance and poise. The lovely finish goes on and on. Perhaps the best Washington Syrah I've ever had! Drink now through 2016 or beyond.
