Introduction

Three guys (=happy nerds) in my Swedish appt. A Monday evening of pleasure. MS prepared some nasty slow-cooked garlic cloves. We also enjoyed a great selection of cheese: Goat (unknown), Stilton and Brillat-Savarin, some bread to go with it and a sliced Italian sausage. The wines were chosen from our cellars for medium pleasure.

Flight 1 - 3 wines for medium pleasure (3 Notes)

There was a call for an even beard tonight. All wines impressive in their own right and displaying a similar level of pleasure and quality.

  • 2001 Château de Viella Madiran 92 Points

    France, Southwest France, Madiran

    Non-blind. Decanted.
Blackish red wine with a large pure nose of red currants and grape fruit.
Happy tart acids and an excelling tannic bounce. Rich, complex and wide. Started out as a rather meager and thin tannic cocktail and in a short time evolved. The woody wood (as opposed to roasted wood) grows and becomes stronger throughout the evening. Still not integrated.
I have 1 btl and am thinking it ought to rest another, maybe, 10 years...

  • 2007 d'Arenberg Shiraz The Dead Arm 92 Points

Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale

    Non-Blind. Decanted 4 hrs.
    Blackish-red.
Rounded, fat, oily aromas and well-boiled lingonberry jam. Nuanced and impressive.
Long, tart, lingonberry extravaganza that during the course of the evening develops towards Auzzie-shiraz-anise-spiciness.
This is an odd Dead Arm bird. I have one more btl to see for how long I can keep it...

  • 2006 Château Clerc Milon 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    Non-blind. Decanted 4 hrs.
    Dark red.
XL roasted oak, Bordeaux nose with slightly more than a hint of the behind of a cow.
Drinking this brings back memories of chewing on a pencil in elementary school. Smooth, fine design. Tannins are hiding but reveal strong bitterness. Somewhat thin on the mid-palate and oaky in a yet unintegrated way. Bordeaux earth and sumi ink wrestle the cedar notes. This is a classic Pauillac.
Really looking forward to the remaining bottles - meaning I will probably not be able to avoid drinking them in their youth...

Closing

We enjoyed tremendously and could not find the WOTN since 3 guys had 3 preferences on 3 wines... Things did not go astray!
