Introduction

Another great night with the NY/NJ crew at Aureole in NYC. The food was excellent and after working out a miscommunication regarding the corkage we had a smaller selection of wines than usual but I don't think anyone went home thirsty. My personal highlights for the evening were the PYCM Mersault, the Mauro Molino, which went great with the lamb, and the Corra. Notes are in the order we had them.

Flight 1 - Sparkling and White Burgundy (3 Notes)

  • 2002 Schramsberg Vineyards Reserve

    USA, California, North Coast

Moderately yeasty nose with ripe notes of pear, apple and stone fruits. Lots of fruit on the palate with some vanilla and creme brûlée oak notes. Medium body, medium fine bubbles, high acidity and a medium long to long finish. Very nice.

  • 2010 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Meursault Les Narvaux

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

Tasted side-by-side with the '10 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Chassagne-Montrachet Les Ancegnieres. Expressive aromatics on the nose showing Winesap apple, lemon peel and hints of florals. Great fruit with intense focus on the palate. Medium body with high acidity and a long finish. Really good and showing better than the Les Ancegnieres.

  • 2010 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Chassagne-Montrachet Les Ancegnières

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet

Tasted side-by-side with the 2010 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Meursault Les Narvaux. A bit closed down. Much more citrus on the nose than the Narvaux showing primarily grapefruit on the nose mixed with some apple notes and some subtle notes of oak and caramel. Citrus and mineral on the palate. Fuller and rounder texture than the Narvaux, but much less fruit. Medium body, high acidity, and medium long finish. I liked it but it didn't show as well as the Narvaux.

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Ripe dark fruit and plums with coffee, eucalyptus and oak on the nose. Similar notes on the palate. Medium high, slightly grainy tannins. Medium full to full bodied. A slight touch of bitterness on the medium length finish.

  • 2003 Château Lafon-Rochet

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Estèphe

Just had a quick taste of this one between other wines. Cassis and pyrazine on the nose and similar on the palate. Medium body tannin and acid. Medium length finish. Decent Bordeaux showing good typicity.

  • 2005 Mauro Molino Barolo Vigna Gallinotto

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Dark color for a Barolo. Notes of red fruit liqueur, rose petals, tar, and baking spice. Noticeable oak treatment, but it is well integrated. Medium body, medium long finish and high tannin and acid. Paired really well with the rack of lamb.
