Introduction

Chicago had its version of the SQN postcard dinner, where mailing list and waiting list folks got together and shared.

Flight 1 - Champagne to Start (4 Notes)

Flight 2 - Whites (7 Notes)

Flight 3 - Sweetie with Foie Gras (1 Note)

Flight 4 - Pinot Noir (4 Notes)

  • 2000 Sine Qua Non Pinot Noir A Cappella

    USA, Oregon, Yamhill County

    Tart red and black cherry with some underbrush in background and still some pronounced new oak spice. Slightly riper fruit on palate, somewhat simple on finish.

  • 2001 Sine Qua Non Pinot Noir No. 6

    USA, Oregon, Yamhill County

    Sweet black cherry and blackberry aromas with modest spice. slightly subdued on palate with great density and good balance. Perhaps not quite as fun as the 2002 Hollerin' M tonight but I think this might end up as a better wine in a few years.

  • 2002 Sine Qua Non Pinot Noir Hollerin' M

    Black cherry and big spice aromas with an odd cherry cola hint (odd for Oregon Pinot). Lush, ripe fruit on palate, lots of concentration and power. I would think this best right now while still fresh, given some signs of heat protruding at the very end.

  • 2003 Sine Qua Non Pinot Noir Omega

    Lots of ultra ripe fruit with a Syrah-like character and clear signs of sweetness. I'd give this a few years to shed some baby fat, and hopefully it will integrate better and not seem too hot. Others liked this more than I did tonight.

    Alluring and forthcoming black fruit aromas and flavors. Lots of density and intensity, with great spice following. Great evolving flavors starting to show nuance and charm.

  • 2001 Sine Qua Non Ventriloquist 94 Points

    In contrast to the Incognito in the next glass, this was brooding and somewhat backward. Black fruit, modest spice on nose. similar on palate, but it took a long time to really start showing much. Much more interesting by the end of the evening.

    Black fruit, great sweet meaty spice. At a very good place now, very accessible. Moderate length and intensity.

  • 2000 Sine Qua Non Syrah In Flagrante 96 Points

    Lots of spice aromas with fresh black fruit. Dense, dark and powerful on palate, great concentration and length. Great now, probably still some upside from here.

    Dense, dark and meaty. Great concentration with plum and black cherry, lots of sweet baking spice in background. Certainly better in another year or two.

  • 2003 Sine Qua Non Syrah Papa 96 Points

    Black cherry, cherry liqueur aromas with great spice. Incredible textures and balance with layers of unfolding fruit and spice flavors. Long, alluring and energetic.

  • 2002 Sine Qua Non Syrah Just For the Love of It 98 Points

    Ripe black fruit, black pepper, licorice, baking spice aromas. Everything comes through again on palate in incredible balance and harmony. Ripe fruit supported with great tannins and acidity. Really sensational Best of the three times I have had this wine, and i expect it will continue to improve for another year or two.

  • 2002 Sine Qua Non Syrah Heart Chorea 97 Points

    Very similar to the SQN 2002 "Just for the Love of It" in the next glass, but a bit bigger, heavier and slightly more dense. At the same time, it was slightly less refined.
