Introduction
Chris invited some folks over, asking us to bring a bottle that should work well with lamb. The lamb was great, so was most of the wine.

2003 Pax Syrah Castelli-Knight Ranch 96 Points
USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
Tasted blind. This wine continues to perform at exactly the same exceptional level. Dense, concentrated black fruit dominated by black pepper on the nose, then accompanies by great set of fresh herbs. Continues to impress on every level.

1997 Jasper Hill Shiraz Georgia's Paddock 94 Points

Very impressive black fruit with supporting aromas of black pepper, thyme, mint and tarragon. Leaner fruit on palate than most of the other wines tonight, but very persistent, with good acidity. If tasted blind, I could easily have been convinced this was from the Northern Rhone.

Blackberry and black cherry aromas and flavors with black pepper and Herbs de Provence. Very nice, particularly at its price.

2001 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage

Backward black fruit with only hints of black pepper and tarragon. Not very forthcoming on palate, there were signs of intense fruit that came through at times over several hours, but not consistently. While this was still good, perhaps an off bottle or at an awkward phase?

Black cherry, black pepper and green pepper aromas. Similar on palate with some underbrush character and spice on finish. Good with lamb.

2006 Scarecrow Cabernet Sauvignon

Ultra ripe plum with some liqueur character and aromas, as well as dark chocolate and vanilla. Lush and fat fruit on palate. I thought was good, others liked it a lot more.

Red and black cherry aromas with pepper and dried herbs. Moderate fruit and spice on palate, somewhat lean.
