Introduction

A fantastic evening of fantastic wines with fantastic folks :)

Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • 2002 Lokoya Cabernet Sauvignon Mt. Veeder 95 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Mt. Veeder

Excellent. From the first sip I had of this, the finish is what really stood out and surprised me...After being somewhat restrained in the mouth, the finish just exploded all of a sudden, and then kept evolving and changing throughout. Silky smooth. Not a fruit bomb at all, but refined and elegant with a sweetness to the nose that again reminds me of a very subtle perfume. I think maybe there's just so many nuanced flavors in wines like this that it comes across like a perfume blend to me...

Minimal decant, probably an hour and drank over the next 3 or 4, but this did keep evolving for a while. This will last for another 15 or 20 years I think.

Had next to 06 Dunn Howell Mtn, 07 Kapcsandy Grand Vin, and 09 Vine Hill Ranch.

  • 2006 Dunn Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 92 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain

Had next to 02 Lokoya Mt Veeder, 07 Kapcsandy Grand Vin, and 09 Vine Hill Ranch.

Way too young, and we didn't get enough of a decant on it, only about and hour or so, then drank over the next 2 or 3.

Tightly wound at first of course, but started to open up through the evening. Once it did I started getting nice notes of dark fruit with maybe a hint of eucalyptus...

Not a bad bottle by any means, just outmatched in this linup.

Give this more time in the cellar, or a long decant now.

  • 2009 VHR Cabernet Sauvignon Vine Hill Ranch 96 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

Consistent with my last note on this. Had in a lineup with 02 Lokoya Mt Veeder, 06 Dunn Howell Mtn, and 07 Kapcsandy Grand Vin.

10+ hour decant on it. My WOTN again, even in this lineup.

This wine is exceptional, and as pinkmoon noted, really did remind me of a younger version of the Lokoya as well. I kept going back and forth between those two to compare. The Lokoya had that explosive finish, but the VHR just felt seamless all around. Has that same "perfume" nose that always wows me. Very well crafted wine.

This can definitely lay down for decades, and will probably improve the entire time.

  • 2007 Kapcsándy Family Winery Cabernet Sauvignon (Grand Vin) State Lane Vineyard 95 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Yountville

Having this wine in the lineup that we did puts it in some perspective, hence my drop in score from the last bottle. Had next to 06 Dunn Howell Mtn, 02 Lokoya Mt Veeder, and 09 Vine Hill Ranch.

    Decanted for 6+ hours.

I thought this was easily the most fruit forward wine, in contrast to the other bottles. Rich and ripe throughout...Big black fruit, but this also had almost port-like edge to it...caramel, butter...one of the other guests noted "I'd bathe in this." :)

This will continue to improve over time...it's still very young.
