Introduction

Spent a delightful morning with Alexandre Chartogne at his family domaine. We discussed terroir, organic methods and the conditions of the roots; visited the cellars and took a walk in the vineyards feeling the soil and trying the grapes. Alexandre is also simply put, a great guy with a terroir-driven vision for making real wines.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2008 Chartogne-Taillet Champagne Extra Brut Orizeaux

    France, Champagne

Dégorgement à la volée, thus non-dosé. Not going to be on sale for a while yet. 100% Pinot Noir from the old single-vineyard Les Orizeaux. A very powerful wine, with lots of stuff going on. Somewhat closed on the nose, but certain fruity spiciness and breadiness is detectable. Tall and muscular on the palate, a product of a very strong year. Acidic backbone is well formed, making sure this might not reach it's moment for a long time. Might open up more with decanting or some time in the bottle without the lees.

  • 2008 Chartogne-Taillet Champagne Blanc de Blancs Heurtebise

    France, Champagne

Dégorgement à la volée, thus non-dosé. Not going to be on sale for a while yet. 100% Chardonnay from the old single-vineyard Les Heurte-Bises. Not as closed and structured as its brother Les Orizeaux, this one is more delicate and charming aromatically at this point with its citrus and brioche character. On the palate less wide but more linear, it is too equipped with wonderful acidity. Should be ready sooner than Orizeaux and should be excellent.

  • NV Chartogne-Taillet Champagne Cuvée Sainte Anne

    France, Champagne

Enjoyed this one a bit warm while walking the vineyards. Nevertheless, this was enjoyable, refreshing and elegant. Perhaps not the flashiest of champagnes but exactly what I'd expect from a basic NV-cuvee. Doesn't get boring at all. Also a wonderful bargain at 20+ euros.

Closing

Without a doubt one of the top growers in all of Champagne. I strongly recommend these wines.
