Truchard Tasting w/Anthony Truchard

Anthony Truchard was back in town and returned to Gibby's for another tasting. Earlier this year we had acquired part of a friend's cellar due to him moving out of state. A lone bottle of Truchard's 1991 Cabernet was included in that purchase. This tasting presented a very unique opportunity to open that bottle, which was only Truchard's third vintage of Cabernet. It was opened a few minutes before being served side-by-side with the young Cab.

• 2010 Truchard Roussanne 89 Points

  USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros

  Yellow color. Initially a bit reticent. Wet stone and mineral aromas, along with green apple and white fruit notes. Fairly heavy acidity; flavors of clay, mineral and stone. Decent finish. Not quite as expressive as the 2009. From Beaucastel cuttings planted about twelve years ago. Truchard farms about three acres of Roussanne. 89 pts for me and 91 for Domino.

• 2010 Truchard Chardonnay 91 Points

  USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros

  In barrel for about ten months. Greenish tint. Notes banana, pineapple, hazelnut and tropical fruit with a lovely toasty overtone. Rich texture, with hazelnut, pear brandy, banana and coconut with a subtle toast quality in the midpalate and finish. Good acidity with a lengthy finish. 91+ pts.

• 2009 Truchard Pinot Noir 89 Points

  USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros

  Blackish ruby color. Aromas of spice, cola, black cherry, white pepper and fresh rhubarb. Developed a nice black tea aroma as well. Medium-bodied, with flavors of rhubarb, black tea, cherry, nutmeg and white pepper. Balanced acidity with spice notes dominating the finish. 89-90 pts. Some of the contributing vines were planted in 1974.

• 2009 Truchard Syrah 88 Points

  USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros

  Inky crimson color. Aromas of blue fruit, incense, lavender and violets, boysenberry and white pepper. Nice legs- lots of glycerin. Full-bodied, with flavors of black currants, macerated black raspberry, spice and pepper. Subtle meaty quality, with heavy spice notes dominating the finish. About 5% whole cluster fermentation. 88+ pts for me, same for Domino.

• 2008 Truchard Zinfandel 87 Points

  USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros

  Crimson color. Notes of pepper, boysenberry, lavender or perhaps rose hip floral qualities, mint and blackberry. Medium-bodied, with lots of spice and pepper on the palate. Nice finish. 87 pts for me and 88 for Domino.

• 2009 Truchard Cabernet Sauvignon 89 Points

  USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros

  Deep crimson color. Vanilla, cassis, black fruit, and spice. Medium- to full-bodied, with great balance and flavors of cherry, black fruit and spice.

• 1991 Truchard Cabernet Sauvignon 90 Points

  USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros

  Opened with Anthony Truchard and the guests assembled at Gibbys. Notes of leather, macerated red currant, green tea leaf, violets, sous bois, bouillon and red berries. Balanced, with lovely red fruit flavors on the palate. Opens a bit in the glass, putting on weight and showing more and more red fruit qualities as it sat- it was still improving as the last sips were taken, perhaps 30-40 minutes after the cork was first pulled. 90-91 pts.
