Introduction
For the September tasting, Gibby's brought in Chuck Corso of Michael Corso Selections, to pour a few French wines from their portfolio.
2010 Marlène & Nicolas Chevalier Crozes-Hermitage Blanc Les Pends 88 Points
France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage
Once part of the co-operative Tain-Hermitage, the family vineyards of brother & sister Nicolas Chevalier and Marlène Laurent are gradually being reclaimed. They currently farm about 3.5 acres at their estate in Drôme. Les Pends was planted with Syrah and Marsanne in 1972. This is 100% Marsanne, vinified in 400 liter demi-muids with a production of around 600 cases. Deep yellow color with aromas of honeyed apple, minerals, lanolin and florals. Full-bodied with a rich texture on the attack. Flavors of apple, pear, stone and wax. A little thin through the midpalate with a decent finish.

2009 Château Margüi Côteaux Varois Blanc 83 Points

This estate was purchased in 2000 by Phillipe and Marie-Christine Guillanton who began restoring the vineyards and gardens. Their first vintage was 2003, and with the 2008 vintage they were certified organic and now make the wines according to biodynamic principles. Their full production is abut 5,000 cases and includes the blanc, a rose and a rouge. The blanc is 8% Ugni Blanc and 92% Rolle, aged in new barrels. Rolle is the French name for the Vermentino grape from Italy. Yellow color with a green tint. Aromas of lemon blossoms, honeysuckle and citrus- simple, but rather elegant and pleasing. Bright acidity on the attack, but then the oak takes over and completely overwhelms the palate. Harsh new oak with little fruit discernible underneath. Shortish finish. Others liked this much more than I did.

2008 Château Sainte-Eulalie Minervois 80 Points

Purchased in 1996 by Laurent and Isabelle Coustal, who then renovated the vineyards and chais. The estate includes 34 hectares planted to Carignan, Syrah, Grenache and Cinsault. viticulture is sustainable and organic but is not certified. Elevage takes place in concrete tanks and barrique. Deep crimson/garnet color. Aromas of stewed black fruit, prunes and tomato paste. Pruny, stewed qualities follow through on the palate as well. Others at the tasting liked this much more then I, but I had to dump it out- as did Domino.

2009 Domaine du Grand Tinel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 91 Points

Crimson color. Garrigue, red berry, cinnamon and licorice aromas. Medium-bodied; nice balance. Flavors of red fruit, pepper and garrigue; shows a bit of alcohol on the palate too. Has a very subtle cinnamon note as well.

2009 Domaine Raspail-Ay Gigondas 91 Points

Inky crimson color. Aromas of incense, pruny dark fruit, licorice, black currants and pepper. Lovely, complex aromatics. Full-bodied, with flavors of red and dark fruit and a lengthy finish.

2009 Château St. Georges Saint-Georges-Saint-Émilion 90 Points

Situated on a hillside overlooking St. Emilion and Montagne, the vineyard is comprised of 60% Merlot and 20% each of Cabernet SAuvignon and Cabernet Franc. The oldest Merlot vines were planted in the 1950s. The wines are typically aged in barriques for 12-14 months. Opaque crimson color. Aromas of black currants, blackberry, rose petals and forest floor. Medium-bodied, with approachable tannins and flavors of black currants, cherry, vanilla, spice and earth. Finishes nicely, with decent length and a good amount of fruit. Very nice.

2009 Château Margüi Côteaux Varois Rouge 90 Points

A blend of 70% Syrah and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep ruby/garnet color. Opens with aromas of black fruit, barnyard and florals- also has a subtle, pleasant burnt rubber note. Full-bodied with firm tannins and flavors of currants, blackberry and spices. Finishes well, with plenty of fruit.
