Another Friday afternoon at Domaine

This was on lollapalooza weekend. Tooch wanted to open up some wines, so that we did. I was trying to race down to meet Scott Clafee, but traffic prevented that from happening. Instead, I opened up my champagne and the 98 burg and we enjoyed that instead.

• 2008 Roses de Jeanne / Cédric Bouchard Champagne Inflorescence Blanc de Noirs Côte de Val Vilaine 92 Points

  France, Champagne

  nose: striking nose that has a linear quality to it with fresh tones of cherries, red florals, mineral tones, fresh picked berries, white fruits and some citrus tones as well. Very good depth, though the nose is a bit on the tight side as well.
  
  taste: medium bodied with sharp medium/high acidity and tones of cherries, red florals, minerals and white fruits with some citrus as well. The structure is fairly big right now as the acidity is a bit overpowering.
  
  overall: I do enjoy this bubbly. I would love to see how this develops with age, but it is pretty tempting right now to open a bottle.

• 1985 Dominus Estate 92 Points

  USA, California, Napa Valley

  nose: flowing and balanced nose filled with tones of cedar, currants, dark red cherries, pencil lead and spice box tones. Very nice depth as well and very aromatic as well.
  
  taste: medium bodied with medium acidity and beautifully balanced tones of cedar, currants, spice box and a good amount of dark red cherries and dark red fruits.There is a very regal touch to this on the palate that makes it extra enjoyable.
  
  overall: A beautiful wine. When I got to this it had been opened for about 3 hrs. There is still much life left in it and a real pleasure to drink.

• 1998 Domaine René Leclerc Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux St. Jacques 88 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

  nose: nice and balanced aromatic nose of red fruits, earth tones, spices, and some dark red cherries. Decent depth, but lacking for the level.
  
  taste: medium bodied with medium+ acidity and tones of red fruits, earth tones, spices and some herbs. Nice balance, again lacking some depth on the mid-palate.
  
  overall: This was a nice lavaux st. jacques. The producer and vintage were unlikely to create an amazing wine, but it was enjoyable.

• 2002 Domaine Truchot-Martin Bourgogne 89 Points

  France, Burgundy, Bourgogne

  nose: nice and aromatic nose of tart red fruits, red florals, fresh picked berries and some spice tones. Nice balance and complexity for the level as well as very good depth for a bourgogne.
  
  taste: medium bodied with nice medium acidity. Balanced with very nice depth for the level along with tones of tart red fruits, red florals and spice tones.
  
  overall: One of the best bourgognes I've had. This is a real pretty wine and has a good red fruit core to it.

• 2004 H. Billiot Fils Champagne Grand Cru Brut Millésimé 92 Points

  France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

  nose: very youthful on the nose with fresh tones of biscuits, warm dough, lemon peels, pears, green apples and a nice underlying mineral streak. Real good depth with a touch of class as well on the nose.
  
  taste: medium bodied with medium+ acidity that is very noticeable. It's not shredding acidity, but it's there and provides some good structure. The tones of warm dough, lemon peels, pears, green apples and a lot of mineral tones as well.
  
  overall: needs some time, but it shouldn't need a ton of time. A very attractive 04 with some class to it that makes it enjoyable. This should be a fun one to follow over the next 10-15 years and further.

• 2010 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast

  this was opened up by another person at domaine after having a bunch of bubbles, older wines, and some half acre beer. Needless to say it was a complete shock to the system and it wasn't decanted. Wasn't all that impressive and came off as over ripe with big tones of dark red fruits, asphalt, black fruits and some spice tones. Full bodied with low acidity and big rich tones of black fruits, spices and dark red cherries. At the point in the evening and without this receiving a decant, I can't really rate it or really evaluate it at this time.

One can never complain with the stuff that gets opened. And, I certainly won't complain with what was opened either. A fun informal gathering with some fun wines as well.
