Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 1999 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Two bottles of this wine were brought and tasted blind. I understand there were two releases with significant variation between the two. Second Release bottling had some floral character to start with dark fruit on nose and palate. Spice traces only. Seemed like a "90 point" wine. First Release bottle bottle was similar but had more intense black fruit, more spice, more freshness, greater length, seemed like a "93 point" wine.

  • 2001 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Tasted blind. Not nearly as good as another blind tried a few months ago. Simple dark fruit, lots of black pepper. Quite short and simple. For me, this was around "89 points" tonight, most of the group also put this near the bottom of the flight. Slightly off bottle?

  • 1995 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Laurence 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Tasted blind. Bright black fruit aromas, then red and black fruit on palate. Lots of structure, with the bones to age gracefully. Great length, best on finish. I liked this more than the group tonight.

  • 2001 Domaine de la Mordorée Lirac Cuvée de la Reine des Bois 88 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Lirac

Tasted blind alongside several vintages of Pegau. Ripe fruit with hints of liqueur, dark chocolate. Good and dense, but somewhat one dimensional to me. My least favorite of the flight, 2nd to last for the group, but still a very good glass of wine, easy to enjoy now.

  • 1998 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Laurence 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Tasted blind. Big fruit with lots of ripe character, lots of enticing spice. Probably at its peak now with moderate finesse or energy on finish. Group liked this more than I did tonight, so I was not surprised when this was unveiled as a 1998.

Flight 2 (6 Notes)

  • 1998 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée 88 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Tasted blind. Fat fruit that seems very upfront and forward, but a little shallow. Black fruit, lush, coming across more modern than most other wines tonight. Again, no surprise to me this was unveiled as a 1998, not my favorite vintage, and that others in the group enjoyed this far more than I did tonight.

  • 1998 Domaine Raymond Usseglio & Fils Châteauneuf-du-Pape 86 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Tasted blind. A "ringer" in tonight's Pegau tasting, I found this also showed lots of 1998 character - fat, ripe black cherry aromas and flavors with just modest nuance. Slightly sweet finish. Others in the group enjoyed this more, it was my least favorite in the flight, the group's #3 of 6 wines.

  • 2001 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Laurence 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Tasted blind. Black fruit aromas with plenty of dark fruit. Firmly structured with plenty of tannins and acidity. Very ageworthy, this is too young for right now, but great length and finish show promise. i liked this much more than the group tonight.

  • 1995 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée 89 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Tasted blind. Good mix of red and black cherry aromas and flavors. Tannins still a bit prominent given the obvious maturity and earthiness already coming through. Time to drink in the next few years.

  • 1994 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée 91 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Tasted blind. Better than another bottle from several months ago. Dark fruit aromas and flavors, nicely mature. At its peak. Slightly drying finish.

  • 2000 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée 90 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Tasted blind. Fat, bold black fruit. Still very young, very ripe, juicy and primary. Hints of alcohol near finish give me pause regarding how well this will age.
