  • 1981 Torres Cabernet Sauvignon Gran Coronas Reserva Mas La Plana

    Spain, Catalunya, Penedès

    Orange jam at the nose with smoky notes, coffee and truffles. Well-balanced on the palate, good acidity and still a lot of body. Perfectly evolved but already crossing the end of its optimal drinking period.

  • 1996 Torres Cabernet Sauvignon Gran Coronas Reserva Mas La Plana

    Spain, Catalunya, Penedès

    Blackberries, leather and some hay at the nose. Youthful appearance on the palate with lots of cassis and silky tannins. Great acidity. Will still improve over the next years.

  • 1998 Torres Cabernet Sauvignon (Black Label) Mas La Plana

    Spain, Catalunya, Penedès

    Abundant nose, explosion of aromas reminding in a way of aged vintage port. Also recognized freshly cooked red cabbage. Concentrated and balanced at the mouth with spicy notes. Great wine but according to Miguel Torres not with the aging potential of some other vintages (1996, 2001).

  • 2001 Torres Cabernet Sauvignon (Black Label) Mas La Plana

    Spain, Catalunya, Penedès

    Reserved nose with red berry fruit, chocolate and some earthy notes. Very smooth and perfectly balanced in the mouth, lots of cassis and a very long finish. Very rich wine but also very smooth and aromatically not very expressive at the moment. More bottle aging is probably still required to unveil the full potential of this wine. Appearing very young, with almost no tertiary aromas when compared with the 1998.

  • 2006 Torres Cabernet Sauvignon (Black Label) Mas La Plana

    Spain, Catalunya, Penedès

    Young, concentrated and closed. Almost nothing at the nose except for lots of black berry fruit. Firmly structured with a massive attack of chewy tannins. Still a very long way to go but great potential.

  • 2009 Torres Cabernet Sauvignon (Black Label) Mas La Plana

    Spain, Catalunya, Penedès

    Not released to the markets at the moment but tasted at a Mas La Plana vertical tasting with Miguel A Torres in Brussels. Jammy cassis at the nose, abundant vanilla and fresh oak. Firmly structured with lots of ripe tannins. A concentrated bomb which will need many years to show some its real potential.

Closing

Mr Torres explained that in his opinion 25-30 years is the ideal bottle age time for Mas La Plana. Having drunk the 1981 along with other younger vintages I can certainly agree that the wine shows great after this amount of time.
Once a year a blind tasting is organized with invited guests from the wine world in which Mas La Plana is tasted along with many of the greatest Cabernet wines in the world ("Ch Margaux, Mouton, Californian cult wines"). Mr Torres was happy to tell us that the wine is able to compete with this wines in terms of quality (and frequently defeats some of the lesser vintage 1st growths) and that the wine is always undefeatable in terms of value. Unfortunately my economic situation doesn't allow me to comment on these claims. From my palate's point of view, Mas La Plana transforms in a heavenly wine after the right amount of time (15+ years).
