WineBerg's baby's first wine night (aka 3rd dinner with WineBerg)

Introduction

Had the pleasure again of having an amazing wine night with WineBerg. Also he brought his baby girl, who is the cutest little girl ever! We all enjoyed it and while the Saxum James Berry 2009 was the wine of the night for both WineBerg and me, most others gave that honor to the Lokoya 2004, but we all agreed that she was the star of the night!

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 1990 Château Cos d'Estournel Flawed

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Estèphe

    Sadly this was corked, but less so in the palate. So we still got to understand the wine a bit. Fully mature now, leather, fall leaves, plums, tobacco, very much non-fruit smell and taste. Very good though, all the more a shame this wasn't a fully clean bottle.

  • 2004 Lokoya Cabernet Sauvignon Mt. Veeder 94 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Mt. Veeder

    This baby has a superstar nose, it just rocks! A cherry-strawberry-plum bomb in the best sense with well integrated oak. This is so awesome. The finish lingered but did not have an afterburner, as WineBerg mentioned, totally different to the 2002 had at the last dinner. Nevertheless, the aromatics were very similar between the two, this coke-hard-candy sweetness mixed with bold black fruit. So I'm rating the two wines the same. If you could combine the nose of the 2004 and the palate of the 2002 you would get one of the best cali cabs ever!! Truly amazing!

  • 2009 Château Pontet-Canet 92 Points

    This is at an awkward stage, very restrained. Clearly there is a tremendous potential, but it didn't unfold it, even after a long decant. Very oaky but not the toasty kind, which totally overwhelms the fruit. Interesting to see how this will develop, but I will try not to touch this for at least 10 years...

Flight 2 (2 Notes)

  • 2008 Clos Saint Jean Châteauneuf-du-Pape Deus-Ex Machina 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    This is very classic CdP on a grande scale. Herbs, minerals and ripe cherries mingle. Very long finish but less dense than the 09 James Berry. It had more grace and balance than the James Berry and slightly less heat, but as WineBerg said, they were strikingly similar. Great wine!

  • 2009 Saxum James Berry Vineyard 95 Points

    USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles

    WineBerg decanted this for 8+ hours and I was super grateful. This is amazing and very Chateaneufy. Incredibly powerful on the palate with the Mourvedre giving that extra kick of tannin. Spices, herbs, cherry, plums and figs in the nose. Slight heat, but that mingled out. Truly amazing experience and my favorite wine of the night.
