Flight 1 (2 Notes)

Owen Roe started production 13 years ago. They make cooler and warmer climate varieties from Willamette Valley to Yakima Valley. They are best known for their Washington Wines.

  • 2009 Owen Roe Red Wine Yakima Valley 89 Points

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Yakima Valley

    59% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Franc, 17% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16 months French oak, 15% new.
    1 hour aeration time, served in temperature controlled warehouse. This required some warming up:
    Plush blueberries, leather, earth and wet rock aromas. The big blue and black fruit filled palate was tight as a drum. Chewy, toasted dried fruits and cigar box. Finish was medium in length, smooth, coating and notes of vibrancy on the hind palate. This needs several more years in the bottle to soften. Good solid wine, but not a good QPR at $42. As with all the Owen Roe wines, the significant increase in production has led to suffering of quality.

  • 2010 Owen Roe Red Wine Yakima Valley 89 Points

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Yakima Valley

    52% Cabernet Franc, 32 % Merlot, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon. French oak 16 months, unknown quantities of new. 1 hour aeration time, served in temperature controlled warehouse.

    Nicely floral, dusted mocha, fresh pencil shavingsand red fruit scents. Pleasing flavors of violets, dried cherries, granite, cocoa and newly forested wood. A bit light weight in the mid-palate, but offers well balanced acidity. Pleasantly tannic and bright, this needs time to amalgamate as well as put on some mid-weight.

Closing

Annual case production of all lines is now 50K (!!). They are not what they were 10 years ago when I first started buying their wine at 2-5K production. They have several labels: Value=Corvidae, Sharecroppers, Owen Roe.
