    Impressive young nose filled with green apples and a lemon soda. Creamy and a little grape.
    The palate has plenty of lemon soda flavors with a prickly green apple tone. Juicy bubbles and a little yeast in the aftertaste. Some sweetness but not overdone. Powerful and tense fresh young acidity with a solid bitterness to balance everything out. Lovely creamy feel to it!

    Decanted 4 hours in advance.
    Very complex nose packed with full-bodied black cherry fruit mixed with tobacco, camphor, resin, smoke and violets. Beautiful nose!
    Heavy extracted but still fresh dark cherry fruit on the palate. Even though the fruit is compact, the wine almost still light and fresh in the mouth. Also some tobacco and violets coming through. An almost insane amount of acidity really balances the wine and the tannins are still harsh with a slightly polished feel to it!
    A simply amazing wine which is drinking perfectly at the moment!!
    On the day it was 98p+ but the day after it was a clear 99p and totally equal with the Quintarelli 97!

  • 1997 Giuseppe Quintarelli Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 99 Points

    Lovely sweet nose of young cherries with just a hint of VA. There is also some resin and acetone mixed with barnyard and wet forest floor.
    The palate is packed with fresh cherries and candied raspberries. Complex palate showing coffee, acetone and a touch of vanilla and also some still quite young tannins and an extreme acidity profile. Big purity of flavors and balance despite the sweetness which is handled very nicely.
    Very decadent and just a beautiful wine!!
    On day two the wine just gets more and more complex and everything is still very integrated :-)

  • 1994 Soldera (Az. Agr. Case Basse) Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 96 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

    Sweet tobacco nose with a bit of sewer notes but also resin and coffee. A bit muted on the nose.
    The palate is more packed with flavors and especially juicy and sour cherries with just a hint of freshly ground coffee. An intense and "sharp" acidity profile.
    Quite an elegant wine but still with a lot of intensity and a long an impressive aftertaste packed with acidity.
    Nicely polished tannins that is however a little bit dominating. Also some green herbs in the mid-palate.
    Very impressive for the vintage! 95-96p.

  • 1990 Soldera (Az. Agr. Case Basse) Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 98 Points

    The nose is packed with impressions: manure, barnyard, sewer, cherries, acidity and pine. All deep and intense expressions.
    Wow, what an beautiful and complex nose!!
    Intense sour cherries on the palate and just a crazy mouthwatering acidity.. The "backbone" of the wine is hugely impressive and the aftertaste is extremely long.
    Huge acidity and a HUGE wine.. It still seems very young on all accounts with plenty of fruit left!!
    Simply one of the best Brunellos ever produced...

  • 1997 Giuseppe Quintarelli Cabernet Alzero 99 Points

    Italy, Veneto, Veneto IGT

    Compact and dense dark sweet cherry nose with a beautiful black pepper edge. The nose is also quite floral and has a lot of violets and pine tree. Some black the also coming through (bergamotte).
    The palate is still extremely primary and is just packed with dark cherry fruit with a hint of vanilla but a lot of freshly ground black pepper. The acidity is also off the charts and really holds the sweetness in check and really lift the wine to an almost unreal level. A very very long aftertaste that is just packed with complex flavors and acidity.
    To be fair the sweetness of the wine almost puts it into the port wine category but the very harsh and strict acidity profile really keeps everything in line and basically saves the wine from going over the top!
    IMHO, one of the most iconic wines and only time will tell if this will end up being better than the 1990 Alzero, which I believe that it will!

    Singular nose and just shows compact, extracted dark sweet cherry "soup".
    Very sweet on the palate with a sweet raisin-like fruit. Very concentrated and solid acidity.
    Could have a decent potential but at the moment it did seem a little bit boring and just overdone.
    Actually, this was a huge disappointment but perhaps it should have been decanted for a very long time!

    Beautiful and complex nose filled with dark sweet cherries and liquorice but also quite floral. Mainly white flowers but also mint, coffee and caramel!
    Amazing on the palate with dark cherries and sweet liquorice with a wild and potent acidity and a solid juicy tannin structure.
    Simply a stunning wine and simply of the best dark desert wines I have ever tasted. Huge potential and an extremely long aftertaste!

    Sweet cherry nose with white pepper and little kirsch.
    The palate has some very refreshing cherry notes with an impressive and structured acidity and still some quite harsh tannins.
    The fruit acidity is impressive but overall it did underwhelm on the night but still a solid wine!
