An excellent line up, with the Riesling and the Hermitage making the greatest impressions on me. I can see how one can get into German Rieslings very easily now! A fantastic evening with a great bunch of people!
2005 Schloss Lieser Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese 93 Points
Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Popped and poured, tasted double blind. Oh wow, my first serious Spätlese and it's wonderful. Strong notes of petrol initially which eventually blew off to give pure notes of stone fruits. Beautiful acidity complemented by the sweetness, very clean, nectarines. Just wonderful!

1990 Château Cissac 90 Points

Popped and poured, tasted double blind. This was 22 years old??! It did not look or smell so, although there was a hint in the taste. Very floral, cherries with a hint of paprika. The palate was elegant with lots of tannins, some secondaries, fairly austere, although the fruit is good. An enjoyable wine although my guess went astray (I thought Sangiovese!).

2004 Domaine des Rémizières Hermitage Cuvée Émilie 93 Points

Popped and poured, tasted double blind. This changed significantly during the few hours we drank it. Initially sweet marshmallow on the nose, which then evolved to sweet red fruits, acquiring a meaty aspect at some point and finally giving a deep licorice aroma. Very tasty on the palate as well, clearly a young wine that will get better with time in the cellar. Excellent now as well!

Popped and poured, tasted double blind. Beautiful cherry, mushrooms, earth, rust on the nose, tons of tannins on the palate, cherry, very clearly young and could get better with another 5 years on it.

2001 Quinta do Vale Meão Douro 88 Points

Popped and poured, tasted double blind. This was a huge wine, tons of fruit, quite heavy alcohol on the nose, vanillary oak, tons of fruit on the palate as well, a very good wine, but not so exciting for me. Felt very young at the moment.

1997 Château Rieussec 92 Points

Popped and poured, tasted double blind. Oh, excellent honey and botrytis on the nose, a very dark yellow, almost amber colour, excellent acidity and complexity on the nose and palate. A joy to drink!

2003 Château La Tour Blanche Sauternes 90 Points

Popped and poured, tasted double blind. Our second Sauternes for the evening, and perhaps not quite as complex as the '97 Rieussec, some beeswax and melon coming through. Also a very dark amber colour. Very good in any case!
