  • 2005 Luciano Sandrone Barolo Le Vigne 95 Points

    WOTN! espresso, coffee bean, mocha, sweet licorice, morello cherry, deep florally perfumed. palate staining with dusty fine tannins. fine texture. open for business but should provide much pleasures for next 7-10 yrs. very developed at this stage and well nuanced.

    fennel, potpourri, black cherry. a bit backward with immense structure compared to 2005. not as elegant - built for long aging. needs more time.

    analytically - this sits right in between 2005 and 2006. should be very promising when this hits its sweet spot although quite enjoyable now. has the structure of 2006 but the tannins are more friendly and the aromatics if fennel, tar, roses, black cherry similar to 2005.

    quite soft and a bit burgundian. maybe past peak. glides over the palate effortlessly with delicate perfumed nose and dried rosehips palate.

    a little burgundian element to the bouquet. perfumed. game, cured meat, dam forest floor, fennel, tar. this is quite brash. it's very big and very bold. still a pretty tannic beast right now. this will benefit more from extended bottle aging.

    very good lift on nose. tar, black licorice, espresso bean. densely packed red fruit on the palate. immense structure for 2005. sweet tannins. will need to revisit 5-7 yrs. this 2005 is built for long aging.

    nose a bit shut down. tightly wound and densely packed. very masculine. cigarbox, sandalwood, black licorice, dried roses and tar. immense structure. built for long haul.

    very pretty burgundian nose. round and thick. very heavy. dried roses, black cherry, fennel and tar. very smooth with very fine grain tannins. long finish.

Closing

My first time covering Sandrone. The wines are thick and rich and definitely altered my perception of how rich nebbiolo could get. If I were to compare to burgundy which I often do with nebbiolo - these would be right around Nuit St Georges. The 2005 and 2007 can be enjoyed now while the 2004, 2006 -the most promising will require the most patience.
