  • 2004 H. Billiot Fils Champagne Grand Cru Brut Millésimé

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

    Tasted blind. Clear, pale lemon. Gentle mousse, small bubbles. Clean, medium+ aromas of apple, lemon, pastry, hazelnuts. Almost dry, medium body, medium+ acid, flavours of apples, nuts, earth. Long finish. Very good champagne, drinking well.

  • NV Bottega Moscato Petalo Il Vino dell'Amore

    Tasted blind. Clear, pale lemon green, very frothy bubbles that gathered around the rim of the glass. Clean, pronouced aromas of white flowers, tropical fruit, grape, melon. Palate is sweet, light body, with medium- acid and frothy, creamy texture. Flavours of white table grapes, melon and cotton candy, with a medium- finish. Decent quality, but lacking sufficient acid to balance the sweetness.

Flight 2 - Mosel Riesling head-to-head (2 Notes)

  • 2007 Joh. Jos. Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

    Tasted blind. Clear, pale lemon. Clean, medium+ nose of green apple, lime, crushed stone with a mild hint of petrol. Initially, a whiff of matchstick was evident, but it blew off quickly. Palate is off-dry, light body, medium+ acid, with flavours of ripe citrus, a little smoke/mineral, unripe stonefruit ... like biting a slightly hard nectarine. Finish is medium+. Good quality.

  • 2005 Markus Molitor Zeltinger Deutschherrenberg Riesling Auslese **

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

    Tasted blind. Clear, medium gold. Clean, medium+ aromas of ripe nectarine / peach, pineapple, honey with a suggestion of petrol. Palate is medium-dry, medium body with slightly viscous texture, high acidity. Flavours of ripe stone fruit and pineapple-y tropical fruits, with a long finish. Very good quality.

Flight 3 - Contrasting Chardonnays (2 Notes)

  • 2010 Jean-Marc Brocard Chablis 1er Cru Vaucoupin

    France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

    Tasted blind, screwcap bottle. Clear, medium lemon in appearance. Clean, medium- aromas of green apple, lemon with a savoury, mineral undercurrent. Palate is dry with medium- body and high acid. Flavours follow the aromas, green apples, light lemon, steely and taut with medium finish. Good quality.

  • 2010 Rombauer Vineyards Chardonnay

    USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros

    Tasted blind. Clear, medium lemon in appearance. Clean, pronouced nose of baked apple, grilled pineapple, peach, vanilla, toast. Palate is dry, with medium+ body and medium acid, round texture. Flavours are oak/vanilla, butter, coconut, baked apple with a medium+ finish. Good quality, with more crispness than I was expecting fr0m the nose, but this is not my thing at all...

Flight 4 - Bourdeaux Quality / Age Contrast (2 Notes)

  • 2010 Château le Bergey Flawed

    France, Bordeaux

    Tasted blind. Clear, medium ruby with a hint of purple. Medium nose of light red fruit, pepper, vegetal/green bell pepper, and an unpleasant volitile whiff of something like mosquito repellant. Palate is dry, with medium- body, medium acid and medium- tannins. Flavours are tart cranberries and bell pepper, with a short finish. Showed very poorly, seems likely it was flawed.

  • 2005 Château Calon-Ségur Marquis de Calon

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Estèphe

    Tasted blind. Clear, deep garnet. Nose is clean, with pronouced aromas of tobacco, dark red fruit, currant, cocoa. Palate is dry, with medium+ body, medium+ acid, and high tannins. Flavours of black currant, smoke, light oak, black olive. Good quality, and nowhere near ready to drink...

Flight 5 - Sweet Finish (1 Note)

  • 2001 Château Broustet

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac

    Tasted blind. Clear, deep golden hue. Nose is clean and pronounced, with aromas of honey, preserved lemon, tropical fruit, spice, citrus peel, and a hint of beeswax. Palate is sweet and full-bodied, with medium+ acid and viscous texture. Flavours of floral honey, candied lemon/ lime peel, spice, with very long finish. Very good quality, with further aging potential. I really enjoyed this.
