Introduction

Met up with some wine folks in Portland for the first time and had a great evening. We dined at Le Pigeon which prepared a series of incredible dishes for us. Besides the food, it was great hanging out with Travis, Andrew, Shane, and Dan. Had a great time!

Flight 1 (7 Notes)

  • 1990 Moët & Chandon Champagne Cuvée Dom Pérignon 92 Points

    France, Champagne

Thought this was a somewhat quiet Dom. Its aromatics seemed tuned down a bit, somewhat like listening to music underwater. The scent of fig and mousse were quite nice and inviting with nice accents of flint and pear too. The palate gained complexity with air showing nicely developed hazelnut, apple, and crushed stone notes. This did have nice acid on the finish that kept it feeling fresh and lively.

  • 1998 Louis Jadot Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Domaine Louis Jadot 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Not as exciting as the bottle I tried in June of 2010. In retrospect, I should have decanted this more. By the end of the evening, the wine was becoming more beefy, floral and complex – but this started out somewhat boring. The nose had nice underbrush, freshly ground spices, dark fruit and meat – but only with time, were these flavors evident.

  • 2009 Francois Gay Corton-Renardes 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

This was the first time I’ve tried this producer. Aromatics just popped out of the glass with big red fruit and leather notes over top spices, florals and exotic dried meats. The palate was firm, but boy oh boy was the fruit pure and fresh. Gorgeous berries, spices, and meats on the palate are firm, but you can tell they have an elegance to them. The most profound thing about this wine was its minerality. Like sucking on a stone that had been dipped in fresh red berry juice. Really great stuff.

  • 2000 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

I’ve had some good experiences with 2000 Burgundies lately, so I was excited to see this being opened. The aromas were rustic but also had a nice juicyness to them. The fruit is bright and fresh, but this also had really beautiful floral aromatics. Like a high end potpourri this was spicy and elegant. The palate wasn’t as exciting as the nose and I think this may also be just in a funky spot right now. The wine was somewhat singular with its red fruit on the palate with subtle floral notes, but didn’t have much else. Certainly a pretty wine, my gut tells me this may not improve much.

  • 2007 Johan Vineyards Pinot Noir Nils Reserve 92 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

My first experience with Johan Vineyards’ pinot. For a 2007, this was fleshy and deep - Dan mentioned that his wines have gained a lot of heft compared to a couple years ago. Had a nice combination on the nose of cranberries, currants, cherry and earth. The earthy notes were exotic – roasted mushroom, brambles, and wet leaves – and satisfying. All-in-all an impressive wine that is among the finer Oregon pinots I’ve tried.

  • 2009 Faiveley Mercurey 1er Cru Clos du Roy 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte Chalonnaise, Mercurey 1er Cru

Nice musky nose to this with some leather, dried meats, fresh red fruit, and dried herbs. Enjoyed the elegant red fruit on the palate and it combined nicely with some fine grained tannins on the finish. This also had an underbelly of minerals and earth that I enjoyed a bunch, too.

  • 2007 Château Suduiraut 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Elegant wine with nice apricot, truffle and waxy floral notes. Love the clarity of 2007 Sauternes, and this was right there. Crystalline fruit were beautiful and pure. Drinking very well.
