Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 2002 Nigl Muscat 92 Points

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Kremstal

My last bottle. The nose on this wine is packed with acacia flowers and stone fruits. Hints of orange and spice co-mingle with subtle peach, pear and some of the most beautiful floral notes I've ever smelled in a wine. Some mistook this wine a Gewerztraminer (I think b/c of the spice), but it doesn't have the rose component on the nose. As time passes the wine continues to unfold into what is, for me, beautiful muscat. Totally dry on the palate, great acidity and length.

  • 2002 Dry River Pinot Noir 87 Points

New Zealand, North Island, Wairarapa, Martinborough

Pinot Noir character? Not that I was able to find. While this wine has a ton of ripe, black fruit, aromatically it is more like Petit Sirah. On the palate it has fairly soft tannins which would lead me away from PS. Dark, sweet blackberry on the palate. I was missing the Pinot character making this a solid red wine.

  • 1982 Château La Tour Figeac 88 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

Bricking at the edge with a med red core. Slight floral nose with a nice accent of spice. Cedar, coffee, toffee. Medium acid and nice length. On the verge of turning into 'red wine'. Probably would've been better five years ago.

  • 1975 Château Lynch-Bages 89 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Fantastic color--suggesting a wine 5 or so years old. On the nose I get a ton of bittersweet chocolate and cocao; a little too much for me. Fortunately after a few minutes it turned into meat and beef blood. Older black olives and spice on the palate. Nice length.

  • 1973 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon 88 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Medium to dark red in color. Hints of raw dough and mint. Impressively, there was very little oxidation to this wine. It didn't scream Cabernet Sauvignon though. Very nice length.

  • 2001 Blankiet Estate Merlot Paradise Hills Vineyard 87 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Big, dark, lush, sweet. A little choc and orange on the nose, but could be mistaken for syrah. Over-extracted and manipulated. It was fun to try a glass, but I don't know that I would want to drink an entire bottle over dinner.

Flight 2 - DESSERT (2 Notes)

  • 1989 Hugel Tokay Pinot Gris Sélection de Grains Nobles 93 Points

    France, Alsace

Dark golden in color. Beautiful aromatics of bright fruit--almost reisling like. Subtle noble rot, bright stone fruits and candied peel. Beautiful mouth feel and length. Wow.

  • 1970 Warre Porto Vintage 91 Points

    Portugal, Douro, Porto

Not a big port drinker, I wasn't that excited to try this wine. But Wow: Dark red core. The floral, fruitcake, anise nose was incredibly intense. The finish was amazing with great shape. Orange, chocolate-raspberry. What a treat.
