Introduction

We used a number of branch cellar wines in this event, some that we were concerned about such as the 1996 Colin Deleger and the 1986 L'Arrosse. No worries however, as all the wines were in good to great shape. The students did a great job on the cuisine and the wines worked well with the food.

Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 1996 Michel Colin-Deléger et Fils Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chenevottes 92 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

    Bought on release and stored in optimum conditions. Medium gold in color. A touch of VA upon opening but this blew off in the glass after a couple of minutes. Apple flavors with some floral notes as well. This is a really nice white burgundy that doesn't appear to be fully mature yet. It's in a great drinking window however, so no reason to hold back.

  • 1986 Château L'Arrosée 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

    Bought on release. Medium red with a little browning. The nose seemed a little minty. Leather, cedar, cassis and violets noted. A midweight wine that responded well to five hours of slow oxygenation, but thinned out after 30 minutes in the glass. This is as good as it's going to get, so drink up.

  • 1990 Dow Porto Vintage Quinta do Bomfim 88 Points

    Portugal, Douro, Porto

    Bought upon release. Medium reddish-brown, somewhat like a tawny. Double decanted 12 hours prior, but still hot with alcohol. Very forward and advanced. The wine didn't have the typical Dow dry finish. Fully mature and perhaps declining a tad. I wouldn't hold this for any appreciable length of time.

    On Day 4 I tried a separate bottle that had been made ready for the dinner event but not used. It was kept in the fridge for the four days. This bottle was better than the first. The alcohol heat is very much tamed with only a prickle on the tongue. Raisins, tart cherries and plums with some chocolate notes. I'm not changing my score but it's nice to know it holds together well for a few days.

  • 1997 Ojai Syrah Roll Ranch Vineyard 92 Points

    USA, California, South Coast, Ventura County

    Bought on release at the winery. Deep red with no browning at all. A big and fruity wine with five hours of slow oxygenation. This is a really ripe wine that is drinking fabulously right now, but will easily give another 10 years of good drinking.

  • 1986 Château Sociando-Mallet 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

    Bought on release. Deep red with no color change noted. It took about 30 minutes in the glass to start to open up after five hours of slow oxygenation. Primary cabernet sauvignon notes of cassis and cedar with plenty of tannins and acid. Not yet fully mature, with seemingly 10-15 years of life still ahead of it.
