Introduction

A small (6 people) charity wine tasting to raise funds for a village defibrillator. None of the participants are really 'in to' wine - but obviously a little interested - the tutoring tailed off as it became a few friends drinking nice wines

Flight 1 - Original Tasting Wines (7 Notes)

  • NV Taittinger Champagne Brut Réserve / La Française 90 Points

    France, Champagne

    2011 disgorgement kept nearly a year since purchase. Fine bubbles and quite an elegant wine, good balance and the year in the cellar has rounded the sharp edges into a very smooth refreshing enjoyable NV champers

  • 2007 Domaine Louis Michel Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre 92 Points

    France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

    This is starting to hit it's stride now - opened 1 hr before tasting. Clean fruit with lemons and citrus to the fore, but no harshness at all. Minerality showing with some floral spice. Good finish and a very good wine.

    Lemon and lime with some floral notes. Simple - not much complexity. Disappointing compared to previous bottles

  • 2002 Domaine Gauby Côtes Catalanes Blanc Vieilles Vignes 89 Points

    More oxidative than previous bottles - has lost some freshness and developed nutty earthy tones. Acidity starting to be a little unbalanced. Would be better with food. I preferred it 2 years ago

  • 1970 Château Haut-Batailley Flawed

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    Shot. Poor quality bottle - bottom shoulder fill - soaked cork came out in one piece to reveal a reddy brown stinky wine. DNPIM

  • 2002 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin Vieille Vigne 93 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

    Stunning nose - cherry and strawberry fruit bursting from the glass. Light mouthfeel with more red fruits spice soft tannin and balancing acidity. Very easy to drink with a lovely long savoury finish. Beautiful now but no rush I suspect.

  • 1999 Delas Frères Hermitage Marquise de la Tourette 92 Points

    Double decanted 2 hours before drinking. Red with brownish tones bricking at edge. Meat iodine and blood on the nose as well as black fruits. Cassis plum spice and pepper on the palate - good finish

  • 2010 Glaetzer Shiraz Amon-Ra Barossa Valley 95 Points

    A wow wine. Deep purple / black. Full of sweet fruit sweet tannin and warmth. Liquorice noted but it's a full on in your face blockbuster which is really enjoyable. Comparing to the Hermitage that preceded it is like comparing a deep meaningful relationship (Hermitage) with a wild one night affair

Flight 3 - A few more (4 Notes)

  • 2008 Bodega Bouza Tannat A6 Montevideo 83 Points

    Uruguay, Canelones

    Dark red earth and berry fruit on the nose. Vary tannic and the tannins are quite rough dominating the berry fruit and spice that's present. Some oaky notes too - I presume its seen time in barrel. Needs food. Probably suffered following Amon Ra.

  • 1999 Alain Graillot Crozes-Hermitage 90 Points

    Red bricking to orange - nose of earth and leather with red berry fruit. Light bodied but enjoyable flavours of bramble fruit and spice and pepper. Soft tannins and a long finish supported by a little acidity. Very enjoyable

    My best (and last) bottle of this. Red fruits with spice and pepper and tobacco scents. Soft mouthfeel with no noticeable angles of heat or acid lovely finish- drinking very well
