    Tasted Blind. Clear, medium lemon appearance. Nose is clean, with medium aromas of lemony citrus, apricot, light oak influence. Palate is dry, medium+ acid, light body with flavours of apples, crisp subtle stone fruit (apricot), mild vanilla/oak. Finish is medium-. Good quality.

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

    Tasted blind. Clear medium+ lemon in appearance. Clean, medium+ aromas of ripe pears, baking spice, nutty oak. Palate is dry, medium+ acid, medium body with flavours of pears, butter, spice, toasted hazelnuts, fleeting tropical fruit richness. Finish is medium+. Clearly very good quality, but not my preference.

Flight 2 - New World Chardonnay Quality Comparison (2 Notes)

  • 2007 Kumeu River Chardonnay Maté's Vineyard

    New Zealand, North Island, Auckland, Kumeu

    Tasted blind. Stelvin cap. Clear deep lemon appearance. Nose is clean, with medium+ aromas of very ripe pears, pineapple, butter, lees, toast, stones. Palate is dry, medium+ acid, medium body with flavours of warm ripe pears and pineapple, nuts, creamy texture but crisp medium length finish. Good to very good quality, but not my preference.

  • 2011 The Little Penguin Chardonnay

    Australia, South Eastern

    Tasted blind. Clear, light-medium lemon in appearance. Nose is clean, with medium+ aromas of cotton candy, confected peaches (fuzzy peach candies?), no obvious oak inflence. Palate is off-dry, medium- acidity, medium- body with flavours of peach candy, dried pineapples. Finish is short, but with unpleasant sugar-weight lingering on the tongue. Acceptable quality, but little chardonnay typicity.

Flight 3 - Bourgogne Pinot Noir Quality Comparison (2 Notes)

  • 2005 Philippe Leclerc Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

    Tasted blind. Clear pale-medium garnet, with obvious signs of bricking on the edges. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity with aromas of dark cherries, spice, juniper, leather, white pepper, woodsy forest floor. Funky, and constantly changing with each inhale. Palate is dry, medium acid, medium+ tannin, medium body, with flavours of ripe bing cherry, black raspberry, cola, savory vegetal notes, slightly meaty and toasty. Finish is long. Very good to outstanding quality... a highly engaging wine.

Palate is dry, medium+ acid, medium- tannin, medium- body, with flavours of tart cranberries, spice and slightly vegetal/leafy hint. Finish is medium-. Good quality, but simple,

Flight 4 - New World Pinot Noir Style Comparison (2 Notes)

  • 2010 Meiomi Pinot Noir

    USA, California

    Tasted blind. Clear, medium ruby with hints of purple. Nose is clean, with medium+ aromas of very ripe jammy red fruit, even a hint of blueberry. Palate is dry, medium- acid, medium- tannin, medium body, with flavours of sweet strawberries, boysenberries. Texture is silky, but mid-palete is a bit hollow. Finish is medium. Good quality, but lacking pinot noir typicity.

  • 2008 Two Paddocks Pinot Noir

    New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago

    Tasted blind. Stelvin cap. Clear, pale garnet, slight brick/orange tint. Clean, medium+ nose of spicy red cherries, pine forest, pepper, mushrooms. Palate is dry, medium+ acid, medium- tannin, medium- body, flavours of red cherries, strawberries, vegetal/herbal note. Finish is medium and crisp. Good to very good quality, seems Burgundian.
