Introduction

I had the opportunity to taste through part of the Gaja lineup with Gaia Gaja. What a treat!

Flight 1 (1 Note)

  • 2010 Gaja Langhe Chardonnay Gaia & Rey 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC

    Golden, straw colored in the glass. Very rich nose with notes of citrus and a touch of banana. Such a creamy and elegant body flows into a round, lengthy finish with great (mouthwatering) acidity. This was the starter wine, which was delicious on its own, and even better after tasting through the rest of the Gaja lineup!

Flight 2 (3 Notes)

  • 2009 Ca' Marcanda (Gaja) Magari 91 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

    Really dark purple, perhaps the most so of all the ones tasted today. Light spice followed by dried cherries on the nose. The body was quite feminine, with bright cherry fruit and touch of baking spice, rounded out by light tannins on the finish.

  • 2007 Pieve Santa Restituta (Gaja) Brunello di Montalcino Rennina 93 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

    Maroon/brick colored in the glass. I got a mix of smoked, dried fruit and spice on the nose. The Rennina shows big acids, with a long and elegant body evolving into soft, structured tannins. I noted a touch of heat (VA?) on the finish.

  • 2007 Pieve Santa Restituta (Gaja) Brunello di Montalcino Sugarille 94 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

    A touch darker than the 2007 Rennina in color, the Sugarille was showing a very subtle nose with dried fruits, spice, and tobacco. It was definitely giving more on the body; very structured yet refined tannins finished it off. Great complexity and balance, it could still use more time to evolve.

  • 2009 Gaja Barbaresco 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

    Light, red, plum color, but it wasn't giving me too much on the nose initially. The body showed light, bright, red fruits. Medium finish, but silky and elegant with fine tannins. Good acids and balance. Still very young, but seems to have good components to age well.

  • 2005 Gaja Langhe Nebbiolo Sperss 95 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC

    Deep, dark purple. Ripe nose with some heat. This is a big, powerful wine with ripe fruit and even bigger tannins. Definitely more on the darker flavor side (black fruits, licorice). The finish just keeps going with good structure. A touch lean right now, but still well balanced.

  • 2009 Gaja Langhe Nebbiolo Sorì San Lorenzo 95 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC

    Dark red body. Subtle perfumed nose. A beautifully elegant body full of plum, black cherry, and darker spices. This is a powerful wine with a long, lingering finish. Refined tannins, good acids and structure. This is a really nice wine right now, and will only get better with time!
