Domenico Clerico Tasting with Luciano Racca

We were really impressed with the whole line up of wines. Domenico Clerico is among the producers of the region that early on experimented with more modern techniques and the wines showed lots of fruit, but still represented the varietals and the region well. The baroli were very structured and seemed like they would keep forever in the right conditions. The 07 Pajana was the most approachable now and the 08 Ciabot Mentin the least. Overall a fun and informative tasting and delicious wines.

  Light, dry and fruity. Faint mint. I've only had a few dolcettos, and frankly I just found them uninteresting, but this now sets the bar. Pleasant.

• 2009 Domenico Clerico Barbera d'Alba Trevigne

  As expected, darker and richer than the dolcetto. Dried dark berry fruits, with licorice accents. Very good.

• 2010 Domenico Clerico Langhe Nebbiolo Capisme-e

  Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC

  Red fruits, good acid and balance, fine tannins, faint licorice. Nice early drinking Nebbiolo. 100% Nebbiolo as opposed to the Arte which contains 10% Barbara.

• 2009 Domenico Clerico Langhe Arte

  90% Nebbiolo, 10% Barbara. As opposed to the Capismee which was more red in tone, this shows darker fruits. There is a faint orange peel note. Maybe a little more complex than the Capismee but I think I like the Capismee more.

  Mmm. Very drinkable now. Not as classically structured as the 08, but balanced and elegant. Cherry fruit with licorice accents. Good depth and richness.

• 1993 Domenico Clerico Barolo Pajana

  The bottle had been open for several hours prior to our tasting, but this still showed surprisingly young. Pretty with red fruits, a little leather and mushroom. The wine is rich with good depth and there is still plenty of fruit and structure present. Luciano said this was a difficult vintage but this bottle showed wonderfully.

  Very structured. Red fruits, dry, some oak. So young. It's all there, just needs years.

  Wow. So young and structured. Deep red fruits and a wall of tannins. A powerhouse that needs many years.

• 1990 Domenico Clerico Barolo Ciabot Mentin Ginestra

  For a wine that is 22 years old, this is remarkably fresh and young. There are some secondary mushroom and earth notes, but still lots of red fruits and tannin. Still has a long life ahead of it but very good now.

• 2004 Domenico Clerico Barolo Percristina

  Of all the wines tasted, this seemed to be the most concentrated. Very deep, very structured with the red fruits and that orange peel note again. An infant. This wine and the 08 Ciabot Mentin seem like they would last forever.
