2009 Shafer Merlot

Sweet, perfumed nose. Ripe, round palate with lots of sweet vanilla flavour. Sweetness masks the high alcohol; must be a fair amount of residual sugar. Not my thing.

Tightly wound but juicy. Chewy and spicy but some sweet fruit. Promising.

2010 Guy Farge Saint-Joseph Passion de Terrasses

Very classic. Silky and elegant and effortlessly outclasses the rest of the reds here: can’t go far wrong with Northern Rhone in this vintage, it seems. Great stuff.

2007 Domenico Clerico Langhe Dolcetto Visadì

Darker and spicier than the Dolcetto norm. Lovely ripe fruit initially then a classic sour finish. Juicy and very gluggable. Would be great slightly chilled.

Also very oaky: you risk splinters if you inhale too deeply. Decent palate though. Plums, some spice and drinking well already. Lingering.

2009 Moorooduc Estate Pinot Noir Devil's Bend Creek

Nose is oddly herbal: rosemary, predominantly. Full-bodied and not much acidity. Spicy. Quite a lot of tannin and a very dry finish.

Nose a little muted c.f. the mature Riojas at the Spring tasting. Still some life left in it but not exactly thrilling; think you’re entitled to expect a lot more for £30+. Dud bottle?

Quite tight nose with some sweet red fruit lurking. Lots of sweet fruit initially but nicely balanced. Tannins a little grainy but should come good.

2010 Jean Foillard Morgon Côte du Py

Nose not that funky by Foillard standards. Still pretty exuberant though: spicy oak, incense and surprisingly dark fruit. Quite light-bodied and juicy. A little tart and cidery on the finish. Ok.

Very easy to like but not that much of a step-up from the Stefan Ehlen Feinherb 2008, which was one of the standouts at the Spring tasting and available for half the price.

Much more muted nose than the Mountadam. Stunning palate though: full-bodied, rich and creamy. Gorgeous texture. Smoky with hints of burnt caramel. Very long. Very good.

Freshly sliced green apple: smells so fresh and crisp! Palate a little heavier and fuller than the nose suggests: Mâcon rather than Chablis. Decent for the price though.

2011 First Drop Arneis Mother of All Harvests

Odd nose: a bit of reduction? Full-bodied with a nice oily mouthfeel. Real teeth-tingling acidity too. Peach and apricot with a little apple. Interesting and likely to be versatile food-wise.

Lemon, lime and wet stones on the nose. Then lots of gooseberry and a huge whack of acidity; shame the stoniness doesn’t translate to the palate. But a decent summer drink.
