  • 2002 Château Lascombes 87 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

    Medium red. Fairly classic Bordeaux nose with some sweet funk and almost a milky smell to it. It’s a little sour on the palate and also the lightest in the mouth of this flight with sandy tannins and decent acidity. The entry has some nice red fruit and black currant flavours going on but the middle and finish seem a bit sour/tart. This will continue to develop but I’m not sure where it’s going though. Good. 87+?

  • 2002 Château Larcis Ducasse 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

    Slightly lighter in colour than the Lascombes. Spicy nose with cab franc-like notes of stems/green with a sweet and sour thing going on. There’s also darker berry fruit and licorice coming through on the nose. There’s decent fullness and richness on the palate that puts it ahead of the Lascombes but behind the Pavie. There’s a bit of austereness going on (not in a bad way) and the finish is tart and seems a little under ripe. Drinking fairy well now. Very good.

  • 2002 Château Pavie

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

    Medium red. At first this was quite shy on the nose and wasn’t giving up much. As it opened in the glass notes of tobacco, riper dark fruits, oak and hints of coffee. Smoothest wine of the flight on the palate and also the ripest and most forward with a heavily extracted but not over-the-top profile. As other tasters stated, this was far less Pavie-like than other modern vintages which is a good thing in my mind. It’s full and rich and smooth on the palate with just a touch of roasted fruit coming through but you really have to look for it. I voted this as the best of this flight at this point and thought it was excellent. But as it sat in the glass (about an hour later) it started showing off-putting roasted notes on both the nose and palate. Not sure where this is going. Judgment reserved.

Grilled Lamb Sirloin rubbed with ras el hanout, ratatouille, pearl pasta, lamb jus with tapenade

  • 2002 Château Léoville Poyferré 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Julien

    Medium red. Nicest nose yet with a classic Bordeaux profile of red and black fruits, bell pepper, tobacco, spice and a hint of funk. Most tannic wine of the flight with fine yet firm tannins and excellent acidity. This shows the most Bordeaux typicity in this flight and is my favorite wine so far tonight. The least approachable of the flight with its structure, but should be very nice in 5-10 years. Excellent. 91+

  • 2002 Château Cos d'Estournel 87 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Estèphe

    Medium red. Less distinctly Bordeaux on the nose than the Poyferre with a modern and ‘universal cab sauv’ profile. In the mouth it’s quite smooth with darker fruit and spicy notes on the palate. Finish is dry and a little clipped. This seemed to improve in the glass and became slightly more complex as the night went on but it’s definitely a more approachable and modern style of wine that lacks Bordeaux character. Good.

  • 2002 Château Montrose 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Estèphe

    Medium red. Nose with closed on this at first but did start to (slightly) open up after some time and heavy swirling. Silky smooth entry with grippy tannins and a dry and acidic finish. This is definitely more forward than the Poyferre. I found this almost to be too round/soft for my liking. A nice wine but seems a little awkward right now; perhaps a few more years will sort things out. Very good. 88+

  • 2002 Château Calon-Ségur 82 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Estèphe

    Tasted blind. Medium red. Modern nose with sweet red fruits and this boiled cereal note that wasn’t very pleasant. After some air it started to show more Bordeaux-like, but the sweet fruit never changed. Softer entry than you are hit with a flagrant blast of acidity and extremely hard and dry tannins. Not really digging this. Average.

Braised Beef Shortribs, Grainy mustard spaetzle, glazed baby carrots with parsley, bordelaise sauce

  • 2002 Château Duhart-Milon 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    Darker red. Cool dark fruit nose with hints of green tobacco. Silky, weighty and powerful entry with nice weight, great acidity and firm but pleasant tannins. This is very young and need 5 years at least. There’s potential though. Excellent. 90+

  • 2002 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 86 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    Deep red. Lighter nose with a note of oatmeal (weird I know) along with loads of oak and dark red fruits. Palate is surprisingly soft and almost to the point of being dilute, with no tannins and a very dry finish. Comes across as modern in style. Lighter and elegant and shows very little Bordeaux typicity. A boring wine. Good.

  • 2002 Château Mouton Rothschild 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    Medium red. Most complex nose yet with beautiful dark fruit, spice, licorice and red currants. Palate was equally as nice with plum and cherry fruit with powdery tannins, abundant and well balanced acidity and a long finish. This is really nice for the vintage and wine of the night for sure, even admitted by the Mouton haters. While very nice now, I’d give this 5 years. Excellent. 92+

    Fresh lemon tart nose with sweet mango, apricot and botrytis notes. Heavy and a bit thick on the palate with a viscous finish. Even with its weight and viscosity, this does show some finesse. Very good.

  • 1875 Cossart Gordon & Co. Madeira Bastardo 96 Points

    Portugal, Madeira

    Brown colour. Crazy nutty nose, baking spice, melted sugar/caramel, wood plank, lemon juice and roasted coffee beans. Smells like it’s going to be sweet, then you taste it and it cuts your palate with searing lemon acidity and a dry and insanely long finish. Major lemon juice on the palate with coffee, nutty and burnt sugar notes. A funky and tremendously good wine. Albert said this was the last great year in the region before phylloxera. What a treat. Exceptional.
