K&L Top Burgundy Tasting

This was a lovely tasting of top white and red burgundies available at K&L Wines in San Francisco. The first two white burgundies were very unique and my picks from the whites. From the red burgundies, I loved the style of all the Mazis Chambertin over the Echezeaux, and my favorite wine from the tasting was likely the 2010 Faiveley Mazis Chambertin grand cru ($200). It was not the most expensive wine (Roty was $300). Total value for the wines tasted was $1764, and so the tasting was quite good value at $50 for the lineup.

Favorite was probably the Bichot ($56) or the Drouhin Clos des Mouches ($110).

  Savory nose, anise, mint; full bodied, fresh, great acidity, apple, a little funky; medium finish with strong acidity, apple. A unique and fantastic wine. 92-93

  Smoky, salinity; rich, burnt caramel (oak), complex, persistent, fruit- pear; medium-long finish. Excellent! 93-95

  More traditional, oily, buttery; full bodied with high acidity, melon, fresh; medium finish. Nice. 92+

  More salinity, slate, melon; slightly rough, but great fruit and balance; short-medium finish. Needs much time. 91

Favorite was easily the Faiveley ($200).

  Pungent stemmy nose, lovely green, eucalyptus, raspberry, elegant; palate is a tad rough, young red fruit, needs much time but superb. This is absolutely lovely. 94-96++

• 2009 Domaine Joseph Roty Mazy-Chambertin 93 Points

  Toasty, masculine, dark fruits, purer fruit, less stemmy than others, floral; black fruits, medium bodied, balanced; medium-long finish. Excellent, but I like the previous two wines better. 93-94+
