Flight 1 - Dinner at Benaton (2 Notes)

  • 1996 Gérard Mugneret Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots 87 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

    (9/9/2010)

Fairly uninspiring. Pleasant nose, barely showing any Vosne spice. Red fruit on palate, short and simple. Clearly Burgundy, but if tasted blind I would never have guessed Vosne or 1er. And this was at a restaurant in Beaune, so the wine hasn't suffered from travel around the world.

  • 1990 Camille Giroud Corton-Charlemagne 84 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

    (9/9/2010)

Dinner in Beaune. Started nicely with a hint of spearmint and some seemingly ripe fruit. On palate the fruit was also nice but quickly started showing a bit over-ripe and flabby. Also clearly very tired, this wine could certainly have used more acidity.

Flight 2 - Dinner at Jardin des Remparts (2 Notes)

  • 2008 Paul et Marie Jacqueson Rully 1er Cru La Pucelle Blanc 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte Chalonnaise, Rully 1er Cru

    (9/10/2010)

Dinner at Le Jardin des Remparts in Beaune. I believe this was my first time trying wine from this producer. Starts with some rich fruit on the nose. Lemon and lemon zest flavors with really good energy and acidity. Probably better in another year or two.

  • 1998 Jean-Jacques Confuron Romanée St. Vivant 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru

    (9/10/2010)

Dinner at Le Jardin des Remparts in Beaune. Good red fruit and moderate spice on the nose. Fruit is a bit lean on the palate, spice seems a bit too oak-driven for this point in the wine's evolution. For me this was a very nice wine that didn't really show as much RSV and its spicy charm as I would expect.

Flight 3 - Wine with Lunch (1 Note)

  • 2007 La Famille Claude Dugat Gevrey-Chambertin La Gibryotte 87 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

    (9/13/2010)

With lunch between appointments around Vosne-Romanee. I understand this the Claude Dugat negociant business, but it wasn't clear if this is from purchased grapes, purchased must, or even wine declassified from the Domaine Dugat lineup. That aside, this wine showed good red fruit with the charm and freshness of the better made 2007s, making it a pleasant wine to drink young.

Flight 4 - Dinner at the Hones (3 Notes)

  • 2007 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

    (9/15/2010)

Citrus dominates the nose with some floral charm that shortly emerged. Lemon and lime on the palate, with really crisp acidity and minerality. Lean and energetic from start through the middle, then more powerful on the end. To me, this showcases what a classic Meursault should really demonstrate. At dinner in Burgundy with the Hones and Bonneau du Martray's proprietor Jean-Charles le Bault de la Morinière and his charming wife.

  • 2007 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

    (9/15/2010)

Incredibly clean and crisp. Aromas and flavors of lemon and lime, great energy from start to finish. Sensational minerality. This is a classic. Slight preference for this over the wine in the next glass, the Lafon 2007 Meursault Genevrières. At dinner in Burgundy with the Hones and Bonneau du Martray's proprietor Jean-Charles le Bault de la Morinière and his charming wife.

  • 1991 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

    (9/15/2010)

From a magnum that has probably moved once - from Vogue in 1993 or 1994 to the cellar in Burgundy from which we drank it tonight. By far the best this wine has tasted in the 3 or 4 times I've had it over the past few years. Mostly primary with elegant spice and some emerging secondary character, but this came across as bright, fresh and energetic, which has not really but the case for the other bottles, even though they were quite good.
