Introduction

I brought the wines, everybody else tasted double blind.

Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 2006 Travaglini Gattinara 91 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Northern Piedmont, Gattinara

    Decanted. This was a rather pale orange red. The nose was very pretty, with nice violets and a hint of licorice, very enticing. The palate followed with strong tannins and cherry, very elegant. This was a really nice wine, seemed to be in a good spot now, but could surely lay in the cellar for a while more.

  • 2007 Cooperativa Agricola Santa Barbara Barbaglio Salento IGT 89 Points

    Italy, Puglia, Salento IGT

    Decanted. Quite a dark garnet red to the rim. This needed some airtime to come out, dark fruits and dried fig on the nose. Quite a bit of tannins on the palate, with lots of dried figs and a slight sweetness to it. A full-bodied wine with excellent balance.

Closing

The wines created a lot of discussion, and were generally liked. The Barbaglio surprised everybody.
