Oregon pinot like nose with a mix of red and black pinot fruits and just a touch of greener notes too. Texturally this was very nice in the mouth with cooler red fruits, extremely fine tannins and medium acidity. A little light on the finish. Should drink well over the next several years. Good.
Soaring nose of cranberries, red cherries and hints of bell pepper. Similar to the Blauschiefer served prior but with added depth. Again a beautiful and silky mouthfeel with very fine tannins and a nice minerally finish. Drink over the next 5+ years. Very good.
This had a nice floral, cherry and tart raspberry nose but its real strength was on the palate with more extremely fine tannins and more acidity too. Definitely the most structured of these four spatburgunders and probably the most balanced as well. I think I slightly preferred the nose on the ’09 but the palate on this 2010. Great now, better with a few years I’d think. Excellent. 90+
Best nose yet that reminded me of Vosne—beautifully spice along with sappy red fruits, floral notes and a touch of molasses as well. A very pretty yet full nose. On the palate this has loads of acidity with the same silky texture and fine tannins as the previous wines. Very approachable but I could see this getting better. Excellent. 90+
Tasted blind – This was opened to compare with the German spatburgunders and got destroyed. This is sweeter and riper with less structure and acidity. Sweet, soft and boozy in comparison to the spatburgunders. I think this would have shown better had it been served on its own or with other similarly styled pinots. A crowd pleasing wine for sure but not my style of pinot. Average.
Tasted blind – Very high toned nose with almost port like esters—boozy and showing signs of oxidation. Very structured and acidic. Lots of VA. Not sure if this bottle was sound. Judgement reserved.
This shows zero pinot noir typicity but what it does show is its Piemontese roots on the nose with notes of tar and licorice that had the others at the table going straight to Piemonte (but no one guessed pinot). There are some roasted red fruit and white pepper notes on the nose and palate with loads of acidity too. A hint of vanilla on the nose as well. Not a bad wine but not worth the price and definitely not a style of pinot I care for. Drink over the next few years. Average.
Tasted blind – lighter in colour, weight and flavours compared to most of the other wines tonight. Pretty nose but with hints of VA. Entry is elegant and lighter in the mouth with delicate red fruit flavours but the finish is a bit clipped. Definitely not as good as the 2009 vintage of this I had a few months ago. Good.
