Flight 1 - Intro Whites: Pinot Gris vs Chenin Blanc (2 Notes)

  • 2011 Spy Valley Pinot Gris

    New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough

    Tasted blind, screw cap. Clear, pale lemon. Nose is clean, pronouced, with aromas of ripe peach, melon, orange blossom, spice. Palate is just off-dry, medum+ acid, medium body, with crisp flavours of peach, tangerine and spice. Finish is medium. Good quality, refreshing pinot gris.

  • 2009 Mulderbosch Chenin Blanc (Steen op Hout)

    South Africa, Western Cape

    Tasted blind, screw cap. Clear, pale lemon. Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of ripe apple, honey, wax and slight vanilla / oak. Palate is dry, medium+ acid, medium body, with flavours of apple skin, nutty/savoury, mineral. Finish is medium. Good quality in an interesting chenin blanc.

Flight 2 - Iconic Australian White Styles (2 Notes)

  • 2004 Tyrrell's Sémillon Vat 1

    Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley

    Tasted blind. Clear, pale lemon green. Nose is clean, medium intensity increasing with areation, with aromas of bright lime, grass/bean, spice, wax, musk. Palate is dry, very high acid, medium- body, with crisp flavours of lime juice, steely minerals, smoke. Finish is medium+. Very good quality in a very strange and interesting wine... seems very youthful despite 8 years age.

  • 2011 Yalumba Viognier The Y Series

    Tasted blind, screw cap. Clear, pale lemon. Nose is clean, pronounced aromas of rich ripe apricot, spice, and orange blossom. Palate is dry, medium acid, medium+ body, with flavours of apricot, ripe citrus, and spice, with a slightly oily texture. Finish is medium to medium+. Good quality, if a bit overpowering.

Flight 3 - Iconic Australian Red Styles (2 Notes)

  • 2009 Grant Burge The Holy Trinity

    Australia, South Australia, Barossa

    Tasted blind. Clear, deep ruby. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of ripe / slightly jammy red currant and strawberry, bramble, herbs and peppery spice. Palate is dry, medium acid, medium tannin, medium+ body, with flavours of sweet boysenberry fruit, liquorish, creamy vanilla, and touch of grilled meat. Finish is medium, with a little lingering alchologi heat. Good quality New World GSM blend, if maybe a little disjointed.

  • 2007 Wolf Blass Cabernet Sauvignon Gold Label Coonawarra

    Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra

    Tasted blind, screw cap. Clear, deep garnet. Nose is clean, prounced intensity, with aromas of black currant, menthol/mint, leather, pepper, toast. Palate is dry, medium acid, medium+ tannin, medium+ body, with flavours of ripe black currant, black plum, mint, cedar. Nice structure, and a medium+ finish. Good to very good quality fruit forward Cabernet.

Flight 4 - South African Reds (2 Notes)

  • 2010 Beyerskloof Pinotage

    South Africa, Western Cape

    Tasted blind, screw cap. Clear, medium ruby. Nose is clean, medium intensity with aromas of red fruit, BBQ meat, earth, and an off-putting whiff of smoke/cigarette ash. Palate is dry, medium acid, medium tannin, medium body, with flavours of savoury red berries, brambles, earth. Medium finish. Quality is acceptable to good, but but hard for me to get past the ashy nose.

  • 2009 Boekenhoutskloof The Chocolate Block

    South Africa, Western Cape

    Tasted blind. Clear, deep, ruby-garnet. Nose is clean, medum+ intensity, aromas of currents and brambles, smoked meat / salami, peppery spice, herbs, coffee. Palate is dry, medium+ acid, medium+ tannin, medium+ body, with flavours of brambles and ripe raspberries, grilled/smoked meat, vanilla. Finish is medium+. Very good quality South African (sorta Rhone) red blend.
