Gosset & La Parcelle 04s and the BS 1996 B de B topped the bill for me. Lots of interesting wines including some mature examples that were still giving.

Magnum. 05/06 blend disgorged 03/10). Quite a bready, yeasty nose. Nicely lively, chalky palate, some toastiness and a fresh clean finish. ***

1996 Billecart-Salmon Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut Millésimé 92 Points

Creamy, custardy nose, a little vanilla and spice. Quite rich on the attack, leading though to a quite mineral finish with bracing acidity. Lacks a bit of stuffing in the middle, but otherwise showing very well. ****

1996 Billecart-Salmon Champagne Cuvée Nicolas François Billecart 91 Points

Slightly darker colour than the b de b. Fuller on the nose too. Spicier. A little more savoury with a nice toatiness. Richer on the palate but seemingly higher acidity too. Quite a zing here. ****

Very pale and light. Coarse bubbles. Inoffensive with a slightly peachy finish, but very inconsequential. A garden party quaffer. **

1996 Lanson Champagne Gold Label Brut 90 Points

Slightly fuller colour than the 96 BS NF. Slightly vegetal nose initially, quite curious, but blows off after a while. Mature notes underneath. Quite rich and toasty across the front end. Still nicely acidic on the finish. Lacks a bit of persistence and finesse. ***1/2
A second bottle corked.

NV Mercier Champagne Brut 88 Points

Believed to be from 1970s. Initially a slightly chlorine, swimming pool nose. Caramel bottom notes. Nicely fizzy still and very drinkable. Good balance. Really quite interesting though obviously mature. ***

Elegant, lively, chalky nose. Similar on attack. Fine with good focus. Plenty of energy. Feels a little immature on the palate, just needs more time to meld and for the dosage to settle. ***(*)

1990 Guy de Chassey Champagne Grand Cru Brut Millésimé 90 Points

Full straw. Very fine bubbles. Persistent. Quite a rich full style. Rounded and quite meaty with a touch of orange peel. Maybe a little advanced but it seems to have slipped down nicely. ***1/2

Slightly curious, chemically nose, quite hard to pinpoint. Quite a sweet, caramel attack and mid-palate.rounded but lacks focus, dpth and precision. Quite easy going. ***

2002 Paul Bara Champagne Grand Cru Brut Millésimé 90 Points

Quite a dense, full nose. Similar on palate. A sense of meatiness. Some dosage evident. Quite full and burly, but fresher and with more finesse than the 90, but that's an age rather than style thing. I prefer this. ***1/2

NV Taittinger Prelude 90 Points

Quite full and rich on the nose. Rounded. A touch of dosage, but very smooth and the other components nicely integrated. some white pepper and blackboard chalk. Really quite interesting and engaging. ***1/2

Full gold. A little volatile, old winey nose. A gingery spice on the attack. Still alive but pretty evolved. Some candied orange peel opening up to a Fanta nose. *(**)

Slightly darker than the 04. a little riper on the nose too. Bright and exotic on the attack. Full and quite rich but not particularly overdone on the palate. Some weight but also a lightness and slight chalkiness. Quite front end loaded cf the 04. ***1/2

More mineral on the nose, and a little more focused on the attack. Chalky minerality. Nice line here. More verve and minerality than the 03 but it's very much the vintage character with the terror transparent beneath. Really complex nose, lots going on here. Floal, mineral and white fruited. ****

2004 Gosset Champagne Brut Grand Millésime 92 Points

Already quite toasty and rich on the nose and quite open and rounded on the palate with elegant citrus fruit around a biscuity core. Harmonious with a lighter, more floral top note than I usually get wi Gosset. Tightens and shows more floral minerality with air. Currently more 04 than Gosset. Similar character to the 04 Parcelled but with a bit more smoke. ****
