Got a chance to try some of Giorgio's (who effectively runs 121 BC - http://www.121bc.com.au/) red wines at a trade tasting.
Again, this was an elbows/writing on back of the hand style tasting so my notes reflect a certain paucity of input.
I did really enjoy the Ciro...not sure why...shouldn't have done. But there you have it.
2010 Nino Barraco Pignatello Sicilia
Italy, Sicily, Sicilia
Unripe damson and cherry with slight sulphur/struck match qualities and a dustiness. In the mouth the body is quite light and the high levels of tannin and acid dominate the quite slight fruit profile.

2010 Le Piane Maggiorina
Italy, Piedmont, Vino da Tavola
Nose: Perfumed, rose over tobacco and leather.
Mouth: Massive tannin dominates. Medium plus acidity helps things a long and, though the fruit is quite subtle, the finish is quite long.
Nice

1999 AR.PE.PE. Il Pettirosso Terrazze Retiche di Sondrio IGT
Italy, Lombardia, Terrazze Retiche di Sondrio IGT
Garnet coloured. Leather, rose, tar and cherry on the nose. In the mouth the wine tastes slightly musty and oxidised, leather, spice dominate and there is still plenty of phenolic grip. Meh.

2009 'a Vita Cirò Classico Superiore
Italy, Calabria, Cirò Classico Superiore
Cherry menthol and medicinal herbs on the nose lead to more herbs and spice (white pepper notes) in the mouth. The tannin and acidity are unfettered by any constraint and ride the fruit into the ground. Having said that, there is complexity and length here and it appeals to my more masochistic tendencies. Lovely.
